Richard Maltby Jr. and David Shire are songwriting geniuses. Technically these songs are the leftovers from their other, better known musicals....But in this case the leftovers are gems. Each song is a masterpiece in itself. Each song tells a story, and by the time you finish listening, you realize how they are all connected....not by plotline, but by the same thread that binds all human beings together. You will laugh at ''There's Nothing Like it'' and ''Miss Byrd,'' and you will cry at ''If I Sing'' and ''It's Never That Easy.'' Every character is one you have known before, next door or at the office. You have probably lived most of these stories yourself. And the melodies will haunt you and never leave you. There isn't a weak song in the collection, nor a weak singer in the cast. This recording is such a rich, emotionally satisfying experience. If you are like me and you somehow overlooked this recording all these years, don't hesitate another moment. Buy it NOW.

When I first heard this cd, I thought it was crazy and that none of the pieces fit together until I realized that's exactly what the whole show is about. Each ''door'' that opens gives you a quick glimpse into the lives of the characters. My only advice if you're going to enjoy this music fully, is to go into the experience with an open mind and a good sense of humor!
