"I'm going to try to get the kits out," he explained frantically.
Suddenly, Snowgaze's shrieked, her pupils dialating to the size of saucers and her tail bristling. Still yowling her heart out, the white shecat bit down hard on the stick, until it splintered into small, wooden flakes. A small kit slipped out into the world, a dark brown one, followed by a shockingly large pool of blood.
Nightfang, overwhelmed by the amount he had to do, nipped the sack off of the kit, and hurried to get the stick out of Snowgaze's mouth to prevent splinters. "Get me another stick," the night-dark tom ordered as he pressed his black paws against the white she-cat's stomach.
Stormstar nodded, looking in horror at his beloved mates' blood.
"Go!" Nightfang repeated his order, now sounding more urgent. Stormstar, yanked out of his terrible reverie, once again nodded and ran out. Seconds later, he came back with another wooden stick in his mouth. Nightfang snatched the stick out of the gray tom's jaws and put it in the shecat's mouth. Snowgaze shrieked again, and she bit down on the stick. Once again, a kit came out, and once again, Nightfang nipped off the sack from the white kitten. The dark medicine cat put his paws on Snowgaze's womb. "One more! You can do it, Snowgaze!" The two toms yelled encouragement to the writhing cat on the ground.
Finally, the she-cat yelled one last desperate screech, and a small, crumpled, white tabby with silver stripes came out. Nightfang approached nipped the sack, and licked it gently. "This is the runt," he explained to the two cats. "She must be looked after better than the other two."
Stormstar purred and licked Snowgaze on the forehead. "You did it," he chirruped.
Snowgaze spoke slowly, in hardly a whisper. "Yes, I guess I did…" she breathed out and was silent for several moments. Finally, she mewed. "Bring them to suckle."
Nightfang brought the three kits to their mother's belly. None of them suckled. Confused, Stormstar gently pushed and licked them. Only the white tabby she-cat stirred, finally slurping weakly at the rich, thick milk her mother had to offer. Nightfang desperately nuzzled the remaining two, trying to revive them. Neither of them made a move, or a sound.
Nightfang sighed and turned to his leader, his eyes brimming with sorrow. "Stormstar… the other two didn't make it."
Stormstar's amber eyes clouded with grief, and a low, sorrowful growl erupted from his mouth. He nudged his mate sadly. "Did you hear that? They're dead…"
Snowgaze nodded, and shifted her eyes up to him. "My sweet, I must join them as well."
Stormstar, suddenly realizing what she meant after a few seconds, pushed his muzzle into her stomach. "No! Snowgaze, /please/! You're the only reason I want to live now!"
Snowgaze whimpered. "I'm sorry." Suddenly, her blue eyes looked up at them, already shining with the light of the stars. "Whatever you do, don't leave your Clan, don't rebel against it, and most of all…" she nudged the tiny kitten suckling weakly, "take care of the Clan's destiny. I love you." Then, she sighed, and her beautiful body crumpled as her spirit left it. Snowgaze was no more. Stormstar wailed, his yowl overcoming the sound of the wind, and pressed his nose to her soft fur.
Nightfang looked sadly at the leader. "I'll- I'll leave you alone," he got up and left the nursery.
Stormstar didn't notice the medicine cat leave, still sobbing into his beloved, white mate's sweet-smelling fur.

i found family storms and cloudburst at my local library and decided to give them a try. i have to say i loved them both!! i was surprised at the ending, because its usually not vc andrews style but still a great ending all in all. i couldnt put it down. whoever says they sucked should reread them and actually "read" it this time. they were great stories!
