The career of Aristophanes as a writer of comedies lasted forty years, from 427 to c. 386. At least forty plays were attributed to him in antiquity, eleven of which survived into the Middle Ages and thus to our own day: the earliest of these eleven is Acharnians(425) and the last Wealth(388). Clouds was produced in 423, and was placed by the judges third of the three plays competing at the City Dionysia that year.

Meet the Author

Aristophanes (English pronunciation: /ˌærɨˈstɒfəniːz/; Ancient Greek: [aristopʰánɛːs]; Ἀριστοφάνης, ca. 446 BC – ca. 386 BC), son of Philippus, of the deme Cydathenaus, was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his 40 plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and they are in fact used to define the genre.

    Classic Classical Commentary

I have never written a review on this or any other website, but felt a compulsion while searching for a book, having just finished reading this ed. of 'Clouds', so good it was. -Dovers edition of the clouds is the best (Enlish) commentary on Greek lit. I've come across in the short time I studied Greek, it has been a great interperative tool, a enriching study, and a joy to read. It has and will serve many students, laypersons (and scholars) to come, that is if classical greek weathers these tumultous times. -Those seeking to put Socrates in his 'proper' historical context will find an invaluable resource in this book. -Many will disagree, especially when the 'heroic' Socrates is reckoned into the bargin, but I personaly feel the author is a bit hostile towards comedy. Yet this does not really detract from the work, and he's far more objectibe than most other scholars in regard to Socrates. -As a second year greek student I found the commentary both illucidating and approachable. Not in the least overly pedantic. Great book! My only caveat is you can't easily obtain a new hardback edition, but such is the state of 'higher' education. So if your have more than a passing interest greek litterature ,don't forego this great work.

"I have decided that because we have become such a target for Bloodclan......we make then a target as well." She waited for any outbursts to subside." Some of you may be worried if you are let me know. Those of you that agree let me know as well. Kits will be trained to deal with Bloodclanners but in a non punishment way. Any arguments leave in result 3 for me."~Thunderstar

Swiftstar laughed. "No, not like the cutter. She's much, much more pleasant." She explained.
