Overview

"[...] She looked clear down to the end of her loveless life, and saw the neighbors coming virtuously to perform the last rites, and wondered why it all had to be. She was unaware of all her years of sacrifice, glorious patience, loving toil. Her life seemed to have been so without point, so useless heretofore; and all that could yet be, how useless and dreary it looked! Her spirit was at its lowest ebb. Her soul was weary unto death. She looked vainly for a break in that solid wall of cloud at the end of the road, and looked so hard that the tears came and fell plashing on the window-seat and on her thin, tired hands. It was because of the tears that she did not see the boy[...]".

I LOVED this book! It was fun to read a book with feisty female characters that was written during a time when good girls were not necessarily portrayed as strong. Truly a pleasure to read.

I purchased this and ended up reading the FREE one from Gutenberg. The B&N EPUB format is really bad. Nearly every other line dropped a single word or two down on a new line and it was too difficult to read. Since it was written in 1920, it's in the public domain so I downloaded it in EPUB from there for free and read that one. I enjoyed the book and will be getting the rest of her books from Gutenberg as well.

Started out promising, but soon became repete with religious preaching. After it became clear that the sole theme was to instill religion into two teenagers, including bible study, church attendance, youth group development, etc., that subject just took over the book and there was no longer any interesting story line. I couldn't get through the book. Couldn't take all that proselytizing.
