Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

This experimental sci-fi work from CLAMP reads like a romantic version of Akira. In the far future, a mysterious government organization monitors and confines psychic children in the "Clover" program. A professional singer and "one-leaf" ranked psychic named Ora has only the ability to predict her own death. The most powerful psychic in the world, a "four-leaf" girl named Sue lives a life of voluntary isolation inside a gilded cage. Sue hears Ora's singing inside her head, befriends her via telephone and hopes to meet her one day. Events in the book unfold in a reverse chronology, as the first chapter takes place after Ora's death and proceeds backwards in time. CLAMP manages to present a richly detailed retro-mechanical future using a minimum number of panels per page; reading this book is like looking into a dystopic future through one tiny, perfectly square frame, as the story unfolds across nearly blank pages scattered with repeating love song lyrics. The character designs are magnificent and tiny details on the clockwork birds and imaginative effects are stunning. Though CLAMP's most experimental work, it's still accessible to a wide audience. Beautiful in Art and Story

Reading CLOVER maybe confusing at times due to the manga's unique paneling, but it's quick to get used to since you become so engrossed in the story. In a world where mecha replaces living animals such as mechanical birds, and robotic rabbits, and cats, you have children who are gifted with psychic powers, whom the Government dubbed as Clovers. With each clover leaf displaying how powerful they are, a four-leaf being the most powerful.
There are four stories, though they are out of order, with the main story taking place in the present, and the other stories detailing more about the past that lead up to the first story.
The art is beautiful as are a lot of CLAMP's works, and the story is deep and tragic as well. Though the series is incomplete [with only 4 volumes completed, and only needs 2 more to complete it], it's still a wonderful read, and is worthy of being in every manga collector's collection.

An older manga but deffinatly worth the Time....

I remember reading Clover when it was published in shojo beat way back when. But I could never find a copy, so when I saw this at Barnes and Nobel I knew I had to get it. Clover takes time in the future when Mecha is the main focus for everybody. Few children seem to possess these psychic abilities and are put into a government experiment called 'Clover' Each child is given a level of power, based on the four leaves of the clover. (Four being the highest) but the story follows the only four leaf and her desire to find true happiness before she dies. Its a very powerful story that is beautifully drawn

Unique, beautiful, but a bit of a letdown

The concept and story of Clover is beautiful and melancholy, with a bit of action thrown in. I was instantly attracted by the style of art CLAMP used, a gorgeous marriage of nature and technology. Although I enjoyed reading it, I was disappointed when I finished it. There were so many questions left unanswered I felt as if I had only read the prequel to the actual comic, but when you read it you'll find that's impossible.

Enjoy the multiple great things about this comic series, just don't expect any happy endings whatsoever.

    Old School CLAMP

If you are ever as lucky as me to find this and are a fan of old-school CLAMP. Pick this one up. CLOVER was made back when CLAMP cared about their work and not making an easy buck. It's art style is stunning and romantic but sadly the story leaves so many holes and is so incomplete it will only make you wish there was more. But none of the less it's a great buy.

    I Also Recommend:

    emotionally compelling

Clover is an excellent read for those who are just getting into manga, and want to vier away from the monotony of the stereotypical book that is read by there 10 year old brother. Though this particular series is directed toward a female audience, I believe that anyone mature enough to enjoy an artistically profound movie can enjoy Clover. only good things to say about this manga, and hope I'm not the only one who planned to pick this up.
