Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Hattie the Hen clucks with joy after each egg she lays in the paper-over-board Cluck, Cluck Who's There? by James Mayhew, illus. by Caroline Jayne Church. Readers lift flaps on each page to reveal hidden eggs, bits of the story's text and ultimately three cheeping chicks. Spatters, dots and bits of newsprint that pepper the cheerful henhouse recall the confetti-like speckling of a bird's egg. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
This lift-the-flap book introduces Hattie the Hen. Hattie the Hen lays three eggs. Soon the eggs begin to hatch. Hattie takes care of the new little chicks. This book only has a few words, but the story is interactive because of the flaps that the reader can lift after reading the words. The flap can be lifted to reveal a picture underneath. The top of the flap also has part of the text too. The pictures tell a part of the story themselves. The pictures also reveal a side character—a barn mouse that has no words but participates in the story as an observer. The reader will enjoy noticing where he pops up in the scene. Recommended for babies and toddlers just learning the joy of reading books. 2004, The Chicken House/Scholastic, Ages 3 mo. to 3.

PreS-This appealing lift-the-flap book is cleverly designed to hide and then reveal a hen's three eggs. After the eggs hatch, readers can lift Hattie's wings and then a patch of straw to discover each chick. As the day comes to an end, the roof of the chicken coop can be lifted to show the mother and babies nestled together and sound asleep. The simple shapes featured in the cut-paper collages give the artwork a variety of textures and colors. Combined with minimal text, the large images are just the right size for toddlers to explore. Children will love moving Hattie's wings to count the objects underneath and will delight in looking for the little mouse that appears in most of the pictures. An engaging offering that's just right for repeated readings.-Carolyn Janssen, Children's Learning Center of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
