Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
This book is terrific! The first two pages give the early reader instructions describing how to read a graphic novel. A little boy called Ben was climbing the stairs to the attic. He had lost something and knew he had no choice to find it, but, he could not ask anyone for help because he did not want anyone to know what he had lost. On his first try, he was scared when the door slammed shut, and, when he ran downstairs, he ran right into his sister. The second time he tried, he found bats in the attic, and the third time he tried he heard footsteps coming up behind him. Who was behind him? What was he looking for? Does he ever find it? This a perfect book to introduce graphic novels to a young reader. At the end of the book the author has included a mini biography about the author and the illustrator. There is a glossary, discussion questions, writing prompts, and pictures of other books for the beginning reader of graphic novels. The illustrations are wonderful and add much to the story. Books written in graphic format are favorites of mine! They make it perfect for students who are reluctant readers and never seem to finish a book on their own. Young adults who want to read anything they can get their hands on will enjoy the graphics, exhilarating story, and fast-paced text. This is also a great way to introduce children to the mystery genre. This is an absolutely perfect book for a classroom, home libraries, and introducing a new format to young readers.
