From The CriticsReviewer: Viki Hedderick, DEd, MSN, BSN (Edinboro University of Pennsylvania)
Description: This book provides a curriculum for healthcare educators to educate new CNA mentors on effective mentoring.
Purpose: The purpose was to collect all the elements needed to create a mentoring education program for CNAs. The book contains appropriate elements to share with prospective mentors in a clear manner. It includes a full step-by-step curriculum for the educators who will develop and implement a CNA mentoring program.
Audience: The author identifies the audience as educators or "champions" of a CNA mentoring program.
Features: The book provides a detailed curriculum including what the educator should "write on the board" and various exercises to support the content. The topics are appropriate and addressed the practical issues of training/mentoring a new CNA, including the tough conversations. The scenarios and handouts make it a quality, readymade product for organizations who want to purchase a program versus develop a program.
Assessment: With the multiple demands on educators in healthcare institutions, this readymade mentor curriculum is a treasure. I have seen many books on the general concept of mentoring, but this is the first I have seen that specifically targets CNAs and that provides a program ready to roll out. This will save an educator hours of preparation time.
