In an art career that now spans six decades, Art Spiegelman has been a groundbreaking and influential figure with a global impact. His Pulitzer Prize-winning holocaust memoir Maus established the graphic novel as a legitimate form and inspired countless cartoonists while his shorter works have enormously expanded the expressive range of comics.

Hoberman and MoMA curator and Dean of the Yale University School of Art Robert Storr bookend Co-Mix, offering eloquent meditations on an artist whose work has been genre-defining.

A companion piece to a retrospective exhibition, this book collects some of Spiegelman's best work spanning nearly six decades along with biographical information and critical essays. The editors trace his career from commercial work for Playboy to his underground, experimental work, including the Raw anthology where he first serialized Maus. The images included provide insight into Spiegelman's meticulous process in creating Maus, of which he remarked "in the time that other artists can draw forty pages, I can draw one page forty times." The book also features many of Spiegelman's controversial 1990's New Yorker covers and autobiographical comics, including one depicting a visit with Maurice Sendak. In 2004, Spiegelman published In the Shadow of No Towers, his comic response to 9/11in the style of "collage where incongruous images could be juxtaposed" alongside his personal narrative of the event. The retrospective also includes Spiegelman's designs for book and album covers, a peek into the artist's sketchbook, and his foray into stone lithography. Film critic J. Hoberman celebrates Spiegelman's duality, noting that the artist "works in the gap between art and commerce, the exalted and the debased...often without a net" and art historian Robert Storr provides detailed analysis of Maus, exploring its themes, narrative, and artistic techniques. Prolific Spiegelman is represented in U.S. libraries largely by his Pulitizer Prize-winning graphic novel, Maus, and In the Shadow of No Towers. His adult-directed work includes a meaty corpus of underground strips (many collected in Breakdowns and Portrait of the Artist as a Young %@?*!) through numerous pieces for his comics magazine Raw, steamy illustrations for The Wild Party, iconoclastic New Yorker covers, and more. Based on a museum exhibit showing in Angoulême; Paris; Cologne; Vancouver, BC; and currently at the Jewish Museum in New York, this book pulls together the entire sweep of Spiegelman's life work, punctuated by commentaries and guest essays. A delightful "Comics Supplement" section collects personal strips as well as tributes to Charles Schultz, Maurice Sendak, and the New York Public Library Picture Collection, all originally appearing in The New Yorker. VERDICT Spiegelman's influence on graphic narrative cannot be overstated, and most libraries serving college-age readers and older should add this lavish and colorful retrospective to the graphic arts collection as well as to the graphic novels shelf. Meet the Author

Born in Stockholm in 1948, Art Spiegelman was the first comics artist to win the Pulitzer Prize, which he received for his groundbreaking bestseller Maus. He coedited Raw, and his comics have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Playboy, and Harper's. He has been named one of the 100 Most Influential People by Time, elected to the Art Director Club's Hall of Fame, made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2005 (promoted to Officier in 2012), and played himself on The Simpsons. In 2011, Spiegelman was elected president of the Angoulême International Comics Festival and was awarded the Grand Prix of the Festival. He lives in New York City.
