Coal Country Music

All Music Guide - J. Allen
Coal Country Music is the audio companion to the Coal Country documentary film, which attempts to alert people to the dangers of "mountain top removal" coal mining. A process whereby the top of a mountain is blasted off for coal mining purposes, mountain top removal wreaks environmental havoc; the film and album are part of a grassroots effort to put a stop to it. A wide array of country and folk artists have answered the call to be part of this benefit album, and all the proceeds go to the cause. You get legends like Tom T.
Hall, Willie Nelson, and John Prine, up-and-comers like Justin Townes Earle, and a sprinkling of little-known singers like Celeste Krenz and Schuyler Fisk. Some of the songs chosen are specific to the subject, like Hall's "I'm a Coal Mining Man," Krenz's "Big Coal River," and even John Prine's classic "Paradise." Others, like Willie Nelson's poignant, solo acoustic version of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind," are more about the feeling, a general statement on injustices being perpetrated. Most importantly in the case of the album itself, though, the whole thing manages to hang together musically, as the folk, country, and bluegrass sounds of the contributors all feel connected. It's partly because of the subject matter, of course, but also because the disc seems to have been carefully curated and arranged to make sonic sense in addition to making a political point. If you want to get brought up to date on the issue at hand, you'd probably be better served by seeing the film, but even if you're just after an affecting American experience, Coal Country Music stands up well.
