    What all Coasties should know

This is an excellent factual account of the Coast Guard's action in Vietnam. Any one who has served in the Coast Guard should read this as so few know what went on. As always the Semper Paratus motto held true, even in Vietnam.

Fills an obvious hole in Vietnam War History

This book opened my eyes to the incredibly broad range of activities of the Coast Guard in the Vietnam War. I, for one, had no idea that some of the missions described in it were Coast Guard actions. It also highlighted some of the tragic consequences of inadequate communications, (friendly fire incidents against Coast Guard vessels), and the heroism of people who suddenly were moved from saving lives to taking them. I really enjoyed it and recommend it highly to any student of the war.

    Coast Guard--The Mystery Armed Force

The Coast Guard has been around since 1790 and it has been in the nation's wars--big and little--since then. Yet, people are surprised when informed that the Coast Guard was in Vietnam. This surprise is encouraged because so often when a song tribute is played to the armed forces only the Army, Navy, Marine, and Air Force songs are played. The Coast Guard is overlooked, not by intention, but by simply a lack of knowledge. Readers of this book will never again forget that the Coast Guard is one of the country's five military services. Coast Guardsmen in Vietnam faced many rigorous tasks: a mix of fighting the enemy, protecting resources, and saving lives. Without orders they added to these, showing compassion to the South Vietnamese people. They did it as part of their unit and they did it on personal initiative. This book will arouse your pride in the American military and will reveal the mystery of the Coast Guard, that it is--a humane, yet formidable, armed force.
