Coastal Landscapes: A Practical Guide to Painting Coastal Scenery

Overview

The sea and coastline hold a tremendous attraction for painter and non-painter alike, yet trying to capture crashing waves, massed rock structures and odd-shaped boats, for example, presents quite a hurdle for the artist to overcome. Although Coastal Landscapes is aimed at those who already have some experience of painting, much of the book will also be of interest and value to beginners. David Bellamy has simplified the painting process so that anyone can tackle these subjects with confidence. This ...

This well-structured course is divided into fifteen chapters. Early chapters cover all the practical aspects of watercolour, pastel and oil painting, as well as getting to grips with composition, the problems of painting on site, and how to evoke that sense of atmosphere and light in a painting. A wide selection of painting subjects is covered, ranging from ports and harbours to rocks, boats, sand and the sea.

Throughout the book there are numerous practical exercises relating to topics covered in each chapter. These not only highlight the key points but also enable students to monitor their progress. At the end of the book a gallery of paintings shows the author's response to these painting exercises. In addition, there are several demonstration paintings with clear, step-by-step details explaining how to paint a variety of landscapes in watercolour, pastels and oils.

David Bellamy's love of the sea and coastline is clearly reflected in his beautiful paintings, which perfectly capture the evocative moods of the landscape. For anyone who wishes to paint atmospheric marine scenes, this book will provide both the instruction and the inspiration, as well as the real sense of achievement that is so essential to success.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
These two books offer opposite approaches for painters developing a personal aesthetic in landscape painting. Working primarily in watercolor but covering pastel and oil as well, Bellamy is solidly in the traditional genre of landscape painting. This highly regarded painter and author (e.g., Watercolour Landscape Course) was brought up on England's Pembrokeshire coast, and those who want to develop skills painting ports, harbors, rocks, cliffs, boats, sand, and the sea and can appreciate his slightly romantic interpretations will find this sourcebook highly satisfying. Philcox, on the other hand, offers experienced students examples from 23 different landscape artists, each of whom briefly explains technique and theory. In addition to seascapes and waterways, the volume includes cityscapes and mountain scenes in styles ranging from realist to impressionist to the nearly abstract. Both books are recommended for general collections; comprehensive collections will want to add a third approach, Frank Lalumia's Plein Air Painting in Watercolor & Oil, for artists who want to be in the landscape and paint it, too.
