Editorial Reviews

Julie Corsaro
Given the interest young children have in the world's languages, this striking, oversize book has built-in appeal. In a round-the-globe trip that spans 12 languages, eight animals, and several machine-made sounds, the simple rhyming text asks (among other things) why a Japanese rooster calls "KOH-KEH-KOH-KOH" while a Spanish rooster prefers "KEE-KEE-REE-KEE." According to the author, "From Spain to Japan and from Israel to here, sounds sound differently to each and every person's ear." While there's likely to be some dispute over whether or not the animals make the sounds ascribed to them (as an example, some English-language speakers prefer "RIBBIT" over the cited "CROAK"), the concept is a valid one. Composed of cut paper, cloth, and other assorted materials, the imaginative collages have great diversity in color, texture, pattern, and design. The world map showing the areas where each language is spoken has an accurate scale. The bold simplicity of the artwork and the appeal of the sound effects make this a great choice for sharing aloud with preschoolers, who will join in with "WO WO"s and "HOW HOW"s of their own.
