Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
American Girl's plush pup Coconut stars in a new line of activity and advice books for girls. Coconut's Guide to Life: Life Lessons from a Girl's Best Friend, illus. by Casey Lukatz, offers cheerful tips from sharing the sunny spot to starting each day wagging your tail. The small, jacketed hardcover has a sturdy cardboard picture frame bound in as the last page. The book is also available in the boxed Coconut Book-and-Dog Package, containing the plush Westie pup sporting leash and collar. The covered spiral-bound Friendship File: Facts on Friends from A to Z, also illus. by Lukatz, with its tabbed pages, offers room for addresses and more. An array of prompts encourages friends to fill in their dreams, favorite friendship moments and other fun facts. Coconut adds pup-sized nuggets of wisdom about friendship (e.g., "A true friend knows you inside out"). Coco-Notes: A Book of Notes to Tear and Share includes party invitations, coupons, and notes for girls to send to friends and family. Puzzle Book: Games, Riddles, Mazes, and More! includes 64 pages of brainteasers, crosswords, riddles, etc.-all starring Coconut. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Coconut, a fluffy white dog touted as "an American Girl's best friend," is the narrator of this address book plus for young girls. Owners of the book fill out some information about themselves at the outset. For example, girls fill out a "favorites" section, an "I'll always remember" section, a "when I'm with my friends" section and more. Following this introduction are pages from A to Z allotted for friends to write their names, addresses and relevant friendship information. The pages also contain a small space for each friend's photo. Interspersed throughout the book's lettered pages are pictures of Coconut and little sayings about friendship, such as "A true friend makes you feel like a star." A binder format makes this attractive book easy to write in. The colors used reflect more of a female sensibility. Boys of a certain age may balk at writing information in little pink hearts, purple flowers and blue stars. So girls with friends of both sexes may have greater success in getting their female friends to fill out this address book. The book, which is one in the publisher's "Coconut" series, could be very entertaining to pass around at birthday parties and sleepovers. Compiling information in an organized fashion is also a useful skill for children to learn. 2003, American Girl/Pleasant Company Publications, Ages 7 to 12.
