Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The Code: The Five Secrets of Teen Success by Mawi Asgedom offers advice for teens about how to succeed in school and beyond. Having overcome enormous obstacles himself during a childhood in war-torn Africa, the author, now a successful motivational speaker, addresses teens in a straightforward no-nonsense way with advice ("Give first, receive second," is secret #3), personal experiences and motivational exercises. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Establishing a linear, yet reflective approach to self-improvement and personal contentment, Asgedom reveals "Five Secrets" that he discovered in his youth and applied throughout his adolescence that he believes will increase the probability of personal success for any teenager. The five secrets refer back to a foundational "Code of Beliefs," and they include: "Win the Inner Battle," "Win Every Day," "Give First, Receive Second," "Never Lose Hope," and "Take Smart Risks." He urges the teenage reader to create an individual code divided into "inner" and "outer" goals and to utilize it as a starting point and reference marker. Throughout this guide, Asgedom interjects personal anecdotes to connect his concepts in abstract form to real-life experiences and applicable situations. Although he sometimes runs the risk of over generalizing or oversimplifying life's complex dynamics, Asgedom does encourage a metacognitive approach to decision-making by recommending activities such as specific goal-setting and continuous journal writing. He advocates an outlook on life that offers the teenager more agency, self-control, and responsibility during a time of uncertainty when external and internal forces struggle for precedence. Along with exposing this inner empowerment, Asgedom attempts to take into account some of the innumerable outside or independent influences on individual happiness and success. As he espouses the value of understanding, determining, and delineating one's journey through life, Asgedom at times blurs the line between selflessness and selfishness. He often under emphasizes the intrinsic or inherent value of respect and support in an attempt to demonstrate how such constructive, altruistic behavior ultimately profits the giver and reinforces or validates the teenager's individual code. 2003, Megan Tingley Books/Little Brown and Company, Ages 9 to 12.

KLIATT
Motivational speaker Mawi Asgedom, author of Of Beetles and Angels, is back and this time he's offering up advice for teenagers serious about taking control of their lives. Asgedom details the way a teen can create a personal code for success through five main points: win the inner battle; win every day; give first, receive second; never lose hope; and, take smart risks. The author shows the way to unlocking these secrets by providing personal anecdotes about the ways he sought out success as he grew up. Asgedom tells of his childhood in Ethiopia, life in a refugee camp in Sudan, and growing up poor in Chicago. Included in each chapter is the "your turn" section, with questions for the reader to sit down and answer as a way to revealing a personal code. The Code focuses on direction, beliefs, attitudes, and goals. Asgedom gives advice on what to do when faced with a challenge and how to persevere. The conversational tone of the book is engaging, addressing "you" the reader often, and even signing off at the end with "your friend." Asgedom's book is a sure-fire way to motivate teens and set them on the road to success. The only problem may be getting kids to pick up this self-improvement book. KLIATT Codes: JS-Recommended for junior and senior high school students. 2003, Little, Brown, 149p., Ages 12 to 18.

School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-Motivational speaker Asgedom puts one of his speeches to paper, urging readers to develop their own code of behavior based on what they want from life and what they want to project to the world. He leads by example, and teens will be inspired by his personal story. Asgedom and his family escaped civil war in their East African homeland and spent time in a Sudan refugee camp before coming to the U.S. where they settled in an affluent suburb of Chicago; he later received a scholarship to Harvard. In this easy-to-read, accessible title, he shares his secrets of success. The text is sprinkled with occasional street slang that sounds natural and speaks to its audience without being condescending. Readers standing on the edge of their futures will find that this quick read offers some valuable guidance. Though no new insights are presented (work hard, play fair, be nice to everyone), Asgedom lends a strong male voice to a sea of guides for teens.-Elaine Baran Black, Gwinnett County Public Library, Lawrenceville, GA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
