Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: JoAnne D. Joyner, DNSc, RN, CS (Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center)
Description: This book presents and reviews the new code of ethics for health education professionals. The case study method is used to facilitate understanding of the code. Each case delineates an ethical issue addressed by a code. The issues and discussion sections that are provided with each case add to the clarity and understanding of each code.
Purpose: The purpose is to present the code of ethics for health education professionals in a manner that facilitates acceptance, understanding and use of the code. The endorsement and publication of the code is intended to further the development of health education as a profession. This work reflects years of thought and study by committed scholars and professionals. The publication reveals a worthy effort. The author has achieved his purpose.
Audience: The book is a useful book for students, educators and practitioners in the health education profession. It is the author's intent that this book be useful to professionals across the spectrum of preparation from student to practitioner, and the author achieves this goal. This is to be expected since the author is well published in the field and has made significant contributions to the efforts to achieve national acceptance and endorsement of a code of ethics for health education professionals.
Features: The book covers the complete code of ethics for health education professionals. Each article of the code is addressed in a case study approach. Each case is presented to address the ethically relevent issue of the article. Moreover, the delineation of issues to be addressed and case discussions add to the clarity and understanding of the code. This approach permits both a broad overview of the code as well as easy access to specific areas of interest.
Assessment: This is a well written and well documented scholarly work that will be useful in the ethical education of health education professionals. It compares well with initial ethics publications for other health professionals. It can serve as a complementary text in the general ethics' education of this profession. It serves the function of providing the ethical code for this specific profession as an accompaniment to the more general healthcare ethics education.
Presents accessible case studies illustrating the guidelines of the Code of Ethics for the Health Education Profession, a code developed in 2000, allowing health educators practice in applying the code to resolve ethical dilemmas. Presents one case for each Section under the six Articles of the code. After each case study, an applicable statement from the code is highlighted, a section on issues pertaining to that case is detailed, and a discussion of the application of the code is offered. Of interest to those engaged in the professional preparation of health educators, as well as those engaged in the professional practice of health education.
