Overview

Code of the Samurai is a four-hundred-year-old explication of the rules and expectations embodied in Bushido, the Japanese way of the warrior. Bushido has played a major role in shaping the behavior of modern Japanese government, corporations, society, and individuals, as well as in shaping the modern martial arts within Japan and internationally. The Japanese original of this book has been one of the primary sources on the tenets of Bushido, a way of thought that remains fascinating to modern world, East and West.

    not bad

This book is called The Code of the Samurai. The author of this book is Thomas Cleary (Translator), Taira Shigesuke and Oscar Ratti (Illustrator). This book is about the rules and expectations of all samurai. It¿s not as much as a book with a beginning middle and an end but serves more as a guide book to someone who is learning about certain aspects of a samurai¿s life and the truths that they believed in. This book was very interesting. I liked the fact that the author gave as many aspects of the samurai¿s life as he could, which is an indicator of a good author. The only things I didn¿t like about the book is that the author didn¿t use a lot of Japanese vocabulary, which may have been because of the translation that Cleary provided and it got kind of boring. The book wasn¿t a very exciting read because it really didn¿t have a conflict. You can¿t really feel like you¿re in the book because it¿s not the type of book that has a lot of action in it. The book was very realistic and you could see that it was accurate because the original author was Japanese. The ending of the book was pretty much like the rest of the book, since there was not a traditional beginning, middle and end. The author¿s writing style was unique but not very good because he made the book seem like it was like a list with a description. The author uses a 3rd person voice, which is typical. The author¿s vocabulary was more difficult than your usual book but I just wish he used more Japanese terminology. The author definitely did not use much dialogue within the characters but he did make sure that they were thoroughly described. I think if he separated the chapters and made them longer and put a little more history in it, it could have been better. On a scale from 1-10 I would give this book a 7 because it did give me an insight on the samurai but it was very boring and I wanted a little more history in the book. I admit the author had potential but the book could have been better. I recommend this book to people of all ages.

Most Incredible book I've ever read!

This book has really opened my eyes to the old ways of Japan- and how they influenced the country today. As a martial artist and philosopher, I have to say that you must read this book! And if you do- don't do it for a grade or credit, and don't think of it as becoming a samurai. Read it for the knowledge and fun it will bring.

The complete code for an individual's life

Like the Art of War by Sun Tzu, this book should be read and read agian by any aspiring leader. The Code of the Samurai is in itself a complete standard that should be adopted to lead a successful life.

    Very Informative

In my opinion as a martial artist, I found this to be an interesting and informative book. From reading this, I feel I have learned a little bit about the way of life of a Samurai warrior.

A sort of Bible for those into the arts of the Samurai

This book has a dynamic outlook of the many steps to becoming or wanting to become a samurai warrior. It explains as it should the discipline and the harsh reality of the struggles those in the past had to go through to become samurai. a very good book to read and own.
