Overview

Early in his relationship with his beloved Border Collie, Codi, author Jeff Maziarek had a sense that "beneath the fur" there was a sentient being with far deeper insights into life than commonly thought. And, in their last year together some mystical events completely confirmed the accuracy of that feeling. In Codi's Journey, Jeff describes these events within the context of an inspiring and heartfelt narrative illustrating the very challenging circumstances Codi faced during the final 12 months of her life.

To provide even greater depth into Codi's story, Jeff details how this feisty canine became a part of his family. He likewise shares many engaging anecdotes about her personality and several of her more memorable adventures over the years. A charming photo gallery with 42 captioned images further brings Codi to life, featuring snapshots from the night she arrived as a 10-week-old puppy to the final week of her life. Any dog owner who has ever shared stories about the "humanness" of their pet, as well as any adult who has ever loved and lost a beloved animal companion, will surely find this work captivating.

Author's Personal Note: My foremost intention in telling this story is to share two key messages. First, that our pets (dogs in this instance), actually are "sages with fur" who have a far greater understanding of life (and us) than commonly thought. Second, that it's perfectly normal to feel intense and long-lasting grief at the loss of a pet. This is particularly so when that animal served as an adult's primary companion for many years.

In this regard, I sincerely want any reader who also has experienced such a loss to know that someone truly does understand the sadness and emptiness they felt when their beloved pet passed on. Finally, it's my hope that such readers come to understand how important it is to fully process their feelings of grief by really feeling them rather than keeping them locked up inside.

"I've experienced the extraordinary love & grievous loss that comes when we're lucky enough to share our lives with amazing creatures. Codi's Journey tells that story with candor, joy & tears. Since they cannot stay long, they teach so much about the importance of honoring each & every moment we have with them, a lesson we might do well to apply elsewhere. A friend once told me that dogs are angels sent down to look after us. Codi's Journey afffirms that belief!"

I bought this book for a friend who had very recently lost their border collie.  Since she lives in the UK and I here in the States, I decided we should both read it. I had no idea what I was in for. This book was so compelling that it sucked me right in.  Codi had very similar traits to what my 3 yr old  female collie has. The strong work ethic, the toy obsession  and the aloofness for affection when it isn't asked for from her. I do believe, too, that dogs are teachers.  They don't hold grudges and they love with their whole hearts. My collies are my children just as Codi was Jeff and Andrea's baby. I enjoyed reading this book. It is nice to see there are other childless couples who treasure their furbabies as much as I do! -Kari Hollman

If you've ever had a pet and had to deal with the loss of that beloved creature, you will truly identify with Jeff's loving, true-life story of Codi. Jeff takes us on a journey of his life with his beloved Border Collie and demonstrates his enormous love for Codi by doing anything and everything to help Codi after she is diagnosed with one of the most difficult and heart-wrenching diseases! This is a true love story from the heart that you will not want to miss! Codi's Journey is inspirational and heartwarming, but it also gives us insight into the depth and caring of the author, Jeff Maziarek. It will warm your heart and leave you with a feeling of awe at the tremendous love shared by the Maziarek family and Codi!

A Sorrowful But Inspiring Story Dog owners will relate to the poignancy found in Codi's Journey. It's the story of a beloved Border Collie who found it appropriate to share her time on earth with the Maziarek family -- an excellent choice on her part because they showered her with much love and affection. Unfortunately, as with all life on this planet, after 12 joy-filled years, Codi's time began to wind down. The story revolves around her last days and the role that spirituality played as both she and her humans tried to deal with her imminent end. Heartbreaking as it is, you will find it difficult to lay this book down before you've reached the final page. Keep a handkerchief or tissue handy. Anyone who has had to deal with the death of their beloved pet will identify with Codi's Journey.

I just finished Codi's Journey last week and I loved every second of reading it! All of Codi's antics reminded me so much of my beloved BC pup, Stella, and I loved reading about the bond between dog and owner. That special connection between human and animal is a gift that everyone should experience. They teach us so many things that life itself does not. I highly recommend this book to EVERYONE. Especially anyone who has a Border Collie! I am so glad I found Codi's Journey! Buy a copy of this book! You will never regret it!

When I saw the cover of Codi's Journey, I knew it was the next book I would read. Those beautiful Border Collie eyes drew me in and I was delightfully hooked. The author tells the story as if he is engaged in conversation with you - I found myself talking back as I turned the pages and laughing out loud at different moments. It is clear that Jeff and Codi had a unique connection, and I loved that he was able to seek out ways to communicate with Codi to better understand her feelings. It definitely gives you a different perspective in realizing your pet's thought process and intelligence. Codi's Journey is a heartfelt read that will make you hug your own pet tighter at night and cherish every moment you share.

Codi's Journey is a prime example of man's interaction with the Master Healers...our pets. Every pet owner knows of the unconditional love that is exhibited by our dogs from the time they show up in our lives in the oddest of ways until the last beat of their hearts at the end of a life that is always too short. In this wonderful and heartfelt read, Jeff shows us that in our attempt to heal them and care for them in what we believe is their time of need, they heal us and teach us more than we could ever imagine. These last important lessons from these furry teachers are the culmination of a life of teaching us what a friend, partner, and defender is and what it's like to be the focus of their life, no matter how they feel. I recommend this deeply-touching book to everyone who has, or who has ever had, a beloved pet in their life and who remembers what they have learned from them.

I was so taken in by the depth of love and honesty expressed in this book. The companionship between ourselves and our animal companions can be difficult to communicate, and I found myself experiencing, along with the author, the transitions and deepening of the relationship he had with Codi. You will want to share this story! Judy-H

"Codi's Journey" is a compelling, heartfelt work about the unquestionable love between man and dog. I loved the Codi conversations especially, although I loved every word. It truly is a love story. While the loss of such a dear friend is so much to bear, next to all the love we are given, it is little. What a labor of love this book was; I can imagine the tears that were shed in the writing." - Gloria Wendroff, author of Heavenletters"

Codi's Journey is a real  life account of the joy, connection and companionship that our canine pals so eagerly and unconditionally provide, and also the heartbreaking emotions we must feel, face and deal with when they become ill.   Author, Jeff Maziarek, takes the reader into his home and inside his heart, as he faces such a dilemma, and shares with us the valuable insights and lessons, that "Codi", his furry friend, is here to teach him.  You will laugh and you will cry, but more importantly, you will close this book having felt the love that is warmly expressed throughout it's pages.

Codi's Journey is heartwarming and inspirational. We are all connected to each other and all of life. To be blessed by having a loving pet to show us how we were created to be, Unconditional Love, is one of the best presents given to us by an All Loving God. As the old saying goes, I am doing my best to be the person my dog believes I am.

I have just finished reading Codi's Journey by Jeff Maziarek, which is the second book that I have read from this author. The story was incredibly heartfelt for me, as I have had many dogs and always knew that they have a soul and spirit that rivals some of us humans. This book clearly makes a statement in that our canine friends are here to teach us life lessons, and the loss of a pet is no different then losing a human loved one. It's a compelling story, and I high recommend it to all who have or had pets. Barry Parkoff

Jeff Maziarek has written a story of love and companionship that will touch anyone who has ever loved a pet that was truly a member of the family, and especially one that was the heart's answer to children. It is a beautiful tribute to his beloved Border Collie, Codi. Jeff has chronicled her joy, her accomplishments, her courage, and sadly, the physically and emotionally difficult days before her death. He has shared all the doubts, hopes, misgivings, regrets, and sacrifices that he and his wife faced in dealing with Codi's illness. Jeff, Andrea, Codi, and Heidi's story is a family's story; one dictated straight from the heart.

Codi's Journey is a warm and sensitive narrative, describing the love, companionship, extraordinary closeness and caring that was the reality of the relationship between a dog and her humans. From the text it's obvious this dog was always tuned into her humans, truly her family, even though they were of a different animal domain. Likewise, the author's descriptions of her enthusiasm for life, her smartness, drive and tenacity make her come alive as the book unfolds. Based on some of the stories shared it's very apparent that Codi's "work" in life was to continually perfect the ability to chase, catch, and retrieve a Frisbee, and she was as determined as any good athlete in perfecting these skills. Even as she aged and her health deteriorated, she maintained this zest for life, and in the process taught her humans about the importance of getting the most out of life no matter what stage of it one is in. If you ever have owned, loved and then lost a cherished animal friend, Codi's Journey will awaken memories and reminiscences of your animal companion and may bring on a few tears - happy tears for having owned and loved an animal that loved you back tenfold. You won't want to miss this story of love and extraordinary friendship.

"It's often said that our relationships help us to define who we are, where we've come from, and where we are heading. Well, what this wonderful book proves for me is that when we are conscious enough, we realize that the relationships we share with our animal companions offer immense opportunities for spiritual growth and personal development. Codi's Journey will leave an imprint on your heart and soul long after you put the book down." Will Murtha, author of "Dying for a Change"
