"Add this title to your "Recommended Reading for Summer Camp" bibliographies"--School Library Journal

Cody's mom is pulling the plug and sending him off to camp. That means no TV, no video games, no computers-for one whole week! According to his wilderness guide, the first rule of survival is to be prepared. The only thing Cody's not prepared for is how much fun he'll have at camp!

"Fans of Cody will stay unplugged themselves until the final pages of this fun-filled story." -Booklist

Concerned that his television and video habits have gotten out of hand, Cody's parents send him to Camp Bear where he learns to experience real life rather than virtual reality.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Dr. Judy Rowen
Cody Michaels is back. This time the nine-year-old is anxiety stricken over a planned trip to Camp Bear--planned by his mother, that is. She went to Camp Bear when she was a kid, and embarrasses Cody by hollering the camp cheer. How will Cody survive being "unplugged," with no computer games, videos or television? Arts and crafts and the swim test bring new opportunities for Cody to make a fool of himself. This entry in the continuing saga of Cody Michaels is a bit more formulaic than the previous volumes (Cody discovers the camp bully's soft spot, etc.), but as usual, Duffey captures the fears and concerns of a nine-year-old perfectly.
School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-Another successful episode in the life of Cody Michaels. His idea of exercise is sitting on the sofa watching the Rise and Shine fitness show on television, so his mother signs him up for a week at the camp she attended at the same age. In fact, she can still chant the Camp Bear cheer and does so at every opportunity, much to her son's dismay. How will Cody survive with no TV, VCR, computer, or video games? He is exposed to the usual camp experiences-a bully, girls, ghost stories, snakes, and nicknames-and finds himself having a good time. He befriends another first timer and creates his own "Camp Survival Guide"-amusing tidbits that appear at the end of each chapter. Duffey's gentle humor and insight into the hopes and fears of a nine-year-old make this book appealing. Short chapters, concise descriptions, and lots of action will grab readers just beginning to tackle chapter books. Black-and-white full-page illustrations highlight all of Cody's ups and downs. Add this title to your "Recommended Reading for Summer Camp" bibliographies.-Kit Vaughan, J. B. Watkins Elementary School, Midlothian, VA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
Marilyn Bousquin
In this slim book, Duffey offers preadolescent boys a great big sigh of relief. Cody and Arthur have little desire to be 'manly men'; they bumble their way through the numerous humiliations of preadolescence just by being themselves.
