Making CBT accessible through the text and companion videos to trainees and practitioners is a worthy objective, putting in the hands of clinicians a practical tool to incorporate and make accessible these therapeutic techniques for a population that is growing and in a critical developmental window.
Audience: The book is written for clinicians in a variety of disciplines, including pediatrics, psychiatry, psychology, and social work. It is also an excellent instrument for residents, fellows, and clinical students working with children and adolescents.
Features: Introductory chapters cover CBT, general developmental, cultural, and ethnic considerations across CBT modalities and the rationale and evidence for the use of CBT combined with medication. Subsequent chapters are devoted to the theory and application of various empirically supported CBT techniques for the treatment of disorders including depression/suicidal behavior, anxiety disorders, PTSD, OCD, bipolar disorder, and disruptive behavior disorders. The book uniquely explains the application of CBT techniques to treat psychological disorders in the context of chronic medical conditions, chronic pain, and obesity. It also incorporates several innovative features that facilitate the understanding and application of the material, such as videos that bring to life some of the CBT techniques described in the book as well as appendixes with patient worksheet examples and information worksheets for parents.
Assessment: This excellent compendium illustrates why and how to incorporate CBT into the treatment of psychiatric and physical conditions in the pediatric population. It is easy to read and is relevant for mental health professionals, even and especially if they were originally trained in a treatment approach that relies more on pharmacological interventions, but are interested in being empowered to manage their patients from a developmental and biopsychosocial perspective.
