Once considered an unconventional approach to the treatment of insomnia, cognitive behavioral therapy has become accepted as empirically validated, data-driven and data-yielding treatment. With the weight of years of effective therapy behind this method, the time has come to make available a concise, practical treatment manual that provides a precise guide to both the how's and why's of treatment and a guide for the clinician seeking to establish a CTB-based treatment center. Cognitive Behavioral Treatment of Insomnia fills this need.

This thoughtful and reader-friendly manual was written to help clinicians from other fields and clinical students begin the process of learning to provide empirically validated CBT-I. The authors also provide practicing Behavioral Sleep Medicine clinicians with information to help to refine and/or expand their CBT-I skills. Lastly, the authors want to provide those undertaking and running clinical practices with the best methods to deliver standardized therapy.

Cognitive Behavioral Treatment of Insomnia is organized into seven parts: definition of insomnia; review of the conceptual framework for treatment; overview of the components of therapy; session-by-session guide; dialogues; assessment and eligibility for CBT-I; and sample documentation. In the appendices, the authors provide copies of some instruments that may be of use (e.g., intake questionnaires, sleep diaries, examples of chart graphs, etc.). The organizing principles for Cognitive Behavioral Treatment of Insomnia can best be expressed as two seemingly simple questions. "Who is appropriate for BTPI?" and "What does one need to know to set up a Behavioral Sleep Medicine service?" With respect to "who is appropriate," the authors present an algorithmic approach to the decision process. As for the "how to" of setting up a service, the authors' broad range of experience and depth of knowledge combine to make the answers to these questions clear for clinicians in practice, regardless of their prior experience or background. With suggestions about the logistics of setting up the physical clinic to session dialogues, Cognitive Behavioral Treatment of Insomnia is a complete resource for clinicians.

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Sheila M. Dowd, PhD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This book provides a step-by-step cognitive behavioral intervention for the treatment of insomnia. The authors review the theoretical framework and a session-by-session outline.
Purpose: This is a treatment manual offering a thorough and detailed guide to the cognitive behavioral treatment of insomnia (CBT-I). There is significant empirical evidence that CBT-I is effective especially long-term and therefore this is an important contribution to the field.
Audience: As stated by the author, the manual is intended for clinicians and students in the field of behavioral sleep medicine as well as those outside the field. The manual provides resources for certification and suggestions for advanced training. The book presents all the necessary components to use this therapeutic intervention. All of the authors are on faculty at leading universities and behavioral sleep departments.
Features: The manual begins with definitions of sleep disorders and the conceptual background for treatment. It proceeds to outline CBT-I session-by-session, providing the theoretical basis, sample dialogues, and necessary tools. The dialogue boxes throughout the book provide important examples of how to present information to patients. A section is dedicated to difficult situations and strategies to handle challenges. In addition, the book provides information for setting up a behavioral sleep medicine clinic.
Assessment: This easy-to-read, session-by-session manual clearly develops the framework for, and provides the tools to implement, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, all while guiding the clinician through the potential challenges. The authors offer useful advice and case examples. Overall, this book will be very practical for students and practitioners and is an important addition to the literature.
