Reviewer: Gary B Kaniuk, Psy.D.(Cermak Health Services)
Description: Cognitive hypnotherapy combines hypnotherapy with cognitive-behavior therapy in order to address various psychiatric disorders such as depression, pain, and sexual dysfunction. The author integrates theory and research with practice, giving clinicians tools to use within a step-by-step approach.
Purpose: According to the author, "this book takes a multimodal approach to understanding and treating emotional disorders. It is written to encourage evidence-based clinical practice and research in hypnotherapy. It provides directions on how to assimilate hypnosis with cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) in the management of various emotional disorders. It lays down a solid theoretical foundation for integrating hypnosis with CBT in the management of emotional disorders. Furthermore, cognitive hypnotherapy is conceptualized as an assimilative model of psychotherapy. The assimilative approach to psychotherapy is the latest integrative psychotherapy model described in the literature. It is considered to be the best model for integrating both theory and empirical findings to achieve maximum flexibility and effectiveness under a guiding theoretical framework."
Audience: The book is intended for hypnotherapists, cognitive behavioral therapists, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals. Dr. Alladin, a clinical psychologist and adjunct professor at the University of Calgary Medical School, has over 25 years of experience in hypnosis and is president of the Canadian Federation of Clinical Hypnosis-Alberta Society.
Features: It begins with a rationale for why integrating hypnosis with cognitive behavior therapy makes sense in terms of treatment effect and because CBT has a solid empirical foundation on which to build. The author then provides an eight-step cognitive hypnotherapy case formulation beginning with major problems and ending with strengths and assets. Later, cognitive hypnotherapy is applied to various psychiatric disorders including depression, PTSD, pain disorders, and sexual dysfunctions. It is a step-by-step approach, illustrating techniques and what should be done in each session. Five appendixes such as a CAB (emotions, facts, automatic thoughts) form, cognitive restructuring form (ABCDE), outline of a case formulation and treatment plan, a specific case application, and a relaxation protocol, which is very practical and contains many different therapeutic techniques. In the interesting concluding chapter, the author notes the reasons this book is better than another on the market: 1) it lays down a theoretical foundation for integrating hypnosis and CBT; 2) it uses a case formulation approach; 3) it provides a step-by-step guide to treating emotional disorders; and 4) it is a template for integrating other psychological theories with hypnotherapy. Dr. Alladin believes that research may ultimately show that hypnotherapy, "as an assimilative form of psychotherapy," is an effective treatment for the future. There are no obvious shortcomings of the book, though I would have liked more case examples of how cognitive hypnotherapy is applied to each emotional disorder.
Assessment: This interesting book is practical, providing a step-by-step approach for integrating hypnotherapy with CBT. It demonstrates how this method is applied with common psychological disorders such as depression and PTSD. Clinicians who use hypnosis will be very pleased with this work because it gives them more techniques to use with their clients.
