After several seasons in the capital, game warden/crime fighter Joe Pickett is back on his ranch in Saddlestring, grateful to be home, reunited with his family and free to once again roam the Wyoming wilderness he loves so much. The one thorn in his recently reclaimed existence is his onerous mother-in-law Missy, a woman apparently totally bereft of redeeming qualities. When his tormentor is plucked up and charged quite plausibly with murdering her husband, Joe feels no compassion, but then his family convinces him to investigate the circumstances of what first appears to be a slam dunk case. When a second body turns up, Joe begins to suspect a set-up. A winning protagonist unencumbered by a dark past or excess emotional baggage.
