Overview

When Earl Alden is found dead, his wife Missy is arrested. Unfortunately for Joe Pickett, Missy is his much-disliked mother-in- law. All signs point to her being guilty as sin. But then things happen to make Joe wonder if everything is as it seems. He has the county DA and sheriff on one side, his wife on the other, and some powerful interests breathing down his neck. Whichever way this goes, it's not going to be good.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

After several seasons in the capital, game warden/crime fighter Joe Pickett is back on his ranch in Saddlestring, grateful to be home, reunited with his family and free to once again roam the Wyoming wilderness he loves so much. The one thorn in his recently reclaimed existence is his onerous mother-in-law Missy, a woman apparently totally bereft of redeeming qualities. When his tormentor is plucked up and charged quite plausibly with murdering her husband, Joe feels no compassion, but then his family convinces him to investigate the circumstances of what first appears to be a slam dunk case. When a second body turns up, Joe begins to suspect a set-up. A winning protagonist unencumbered by a dark past or excess emotional baggage.

Tracy Grant
Cold Wind repeatedly poses the question: "What's right?" That its characters can give only imperfect answers—and that those answers are colored by perceptions and prejudices they are unaware of—makes for a satisfying, if disquieting, read…Box treats the vast Western landscape as a recurring character…If you've never heard coyotes howl through a Yellowstone night or seen the dawn break over the Tetons, Cold Wind will serve as a first-rate travelogue. If you have, the novel will bring those experiences back for you without the stomach-churning landing at the Jackson Hole, Wyo., airport.
—The Washington Post
Publishers Weekly
Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett must try to prove that his despised mother-in-law, Missy Alden, isn't guilty of murdering Earl Alden, her fifth husband, in Box's searing 11th Joe Pickett novel (after Nowhere to Run). Pickett's gruesome discovery of Alden's body is followed almost immediately by the stage-managed arrest of Missy by Sheriff Kyle McLanahan. Both Missy and Earl have done plenty to earn the enmity of their neighbors, so Missy's arrest benefits McLanahan's bid for re-election, but Pickett is surprised to find county attorney Lisa Rich already convinced the case is solid. Pickett could use the help of his friend Nate Romanowski, but they are on the outs. Meanwhile, Romanowski, hunted by the widow of a man he killed, finds his withdrawal from the world has endangered others. Box parlays a heady mix of Wyoming politics and the advent of wind power into a deadly brew. This engaging series just keeps getting better with each new entry. Author tour. (Mar.)
Library Journal
Wind turbines might be touted as a clean alternative to Wyoming's abundant fossil fuels, but the siren call of easy money leads to murder on the sprawling Alden wind farm one August morning. Missy, Joe Pickett's gold-digging, serial monogamist mother-in-law, is arrested for the bizarre murder of her latest catch, Earl Alden. Is she capable of cold-blooded murder? Simultaneously, an old enemy ambushes Joe's outlaw colleague, Nate Romanowski, and his lover. Nate's grief-driven hunt for revenge adds meaty action to this multistranded tale. Estranged for nearly a year (after the events of Nowhere To Run), Joe and Nate here reconcile, and readers will be riveted by the dilemmas Nate faces in a cliff-hanger plot device. VERDICT Joe's game warden responsibilities take a backseat in this 11th entry in an outstanding series. As Nate's fugitive life becomes more precarious, Joe will again be forced to make decisions that place him outside of his comfort zone as a government man.—Teresa L. Jacobsen, Solano Cty. Lib., Fairfield, CA
Kirkus Reviews

Wyoming Fish and Game Warden Joe Pickett's fondest dream becomes his worst nightmare when his loathsome mother-in-law is arrested for murder.

Earl Alden, the sixth suitor to take Missy Vankueren Longbrake Alden to the nuptial bed, was proud of the 100 new wind turbines sprouting on his spread, the Thunderbird Ranch. But someone must have disliked both them and him, because Joe finds his corpse chained to the vane of one of them, rotating briskly. Joe's current nemesis, county sheriff Kyle McLanahan, and rookie county attorney Lisa Rich, announce that they've got an airtight case against Missy based on the testimony of an unnamed informant who maintains that she engaged him to kill the Earl of Lexington, who in a reversal of the customary order of things had been preparing to divorce her before she could tire of him. Joe, whose dislike of his overbearing, manipulative mother-in-law crystallized into something harder when she divorced rancher Bud Longbrake, confiscated his family's property and left him empty-handed, finds himself in the unwelcome position of hunting for exculpatory evidence. He'd love to have the help of outlaw falconer Nate Romanowski once more. But Nate, following a serious quarrel with Joe (Nowhere to Run,2010), has gone to ground somewhere he hopes will be safe from the old Special Forces colleagues he suspects have been sent to find and kill him. It looks like both men will be on their own until they collide just in time for a stunning courtroom finale.

Joe, who insists that "I'm not on a side," spends more time than he'd like in rooms with ceilings, but the mystery is strong enough to compensate, and the revelations about wind farms will curl your hair no matter which side you're on.

This complex mystery with its strong casting is what fans expect in the Pickett investigative series

Joe Pickett is happy being home in Saddlestring, Wyoming with his beloved wife Marybeth and their daughter instead of being the Wyoming governor's point man. The only person who resides in the county that he dislikes is his mother-in-law Missy, who just married her sixth husband multimillionaire Earl Alden. However he is missing and she demands her game warden son-in-law find him.

Joe arrives at the ranch and quickly finds a body in a wind turbine. He climbs the ladder and identifies the corpse as his latest father-in-law. Sheriff McLachlan orders him down as he knew this was a crime scene before her got there due to an informant's tip. He arrests Missy, but Joe believes she is being framed as the informant is her ex husband Bud Longbrake who lost his ranch to her when she divorced him. Marybeth begs Joe to investigate, which he reluctantly does. He quickly learns everyone within Earl's scope wanted him dead. That is enough for Missy to be not guilty in court, but Marybeth wants her mom proven innocent.

This complex mystery with its strong casting is what fans expect in the Pickett investigative series as C.J. Box provides another terrific tale. The story line is personal because Joe and Missy detest one another, but both love Marybeth. Readers will enjoy Cold Wind as the hero works a case trying to prove his number one enemy is innocent.

    Timely subject, good mystery

How might the push for wind energy provide a motive for murder? I really like the complexity of the plots and characters in this series. Read the books in order for the best understanding.

    More than checking fishing licenses....

I read C. J. Box when he put out his first Joe Pickett novel in 2001. I thought it was a great debut and picked up the next few as they came out. Well, then I kind of missed a few. I just finished the brand new book ( #11) in this series - Cold Wind - and I'm kicking myself. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed this character.
Joe Pickett is a game warden in Wyoming. But Joe does a lot more than check hunting licenses and monitor wildlife.

Joe is out patrolling the high ridges - home to the newest kind of farming in wind swept Wyoming - wind farms. He notices that one turbine seems to be turning slower than than the others - the dead body tied to it could be the reason. The body turns out to be Earl, the fifth husband of Joe's mother-in-law Missy. Missy and Joe have never gotten along, but when Missy is charged with murder, both she and Joe's wife Marybeth ask him to look into things on his own. It looks like the local sheriff has already tried and convicted Missy.

Box has taken a very current and very hot topic and woven a great mystery around the whole issue of wind farms. (There's lots of debate in my part of the world about them right now)

Joe Pickett is a wonderfully likable character who tries to do the right thing by everyone, every time. Think white hat. The supporting characters are just as well drawn - the sheriff and his cronies are eminently unlikeable. As is Joe's cold, calculating mother-in-law. Joe's personal life has evolved throughout the novels as well - I wonder how much of the trials of raising three daughters mirrors Box's own life with three daughters. Joe and Marybeth's relationship seems very real as well. The secondary storyline involving Joe's friend Nate Romanowski totally grabbed me. Nate is a master falconer and fugitive. He has gone off the grid and underground in the hills of Wyoming. There are those that want him dead. More Nate please! (Fans of Joe Pike and Jack Reacher would like this character)

Box writes what he knows. His descriptions of the land, the politics, social issues and the people of Wyoming all ring true. The plotting is tight, the story flows seamlessly and the ending was great.

    Highly Recommend

Another fantastic read from C.J. Box and I can't wait for #12. I can only hope Joe ages slowly. Although each is a great read on it's own, I think it's better to start at the beginning and read them all. Make's it easier to understand the character development and references to earlier events.

Please dont ruin it for the rest of us!!

I hate going through the reviews to get an insight on a book only to find people like "harstan" has pretty much given away all the best parts. A review is what a person thought about the book, not that person telling everyone what the book is about in such long, long detail. It kinda ruins it for those of us that still haven't read it yet. A 2cents review is okay but a 75cent review is a bit much!

    Cold Wind

Joe Picket's mother-in-law is arrested for the murder of her fifth husband, Earl Alden. Earl, a wealthy landowner was found hanging from one of the wind turbines, he was having installed on his property. Although this is the eleventh installment of the Joe Pickett mysteries, this is the first that I have read. Since not knowing the character and his background, I found the descriptive narratives of Wyoming life intriguing. Not the most suspenseful of stories, but still enjoyable nonetheless.

    CJ needs help

A good story is annoyingly fouled with inept proof-reading and or editing. The publisher should take a long look at especially the last few chapters and ask themselves - did they earn their share?

Poor Plot-Not up to Box's prior Pickett's series!

l've read alll of all of Box's novels. Cold Wind is a disappointment. Pickett'$ outdoor escapades are lost in domestic banter and plot; a 'Redbook' style story. The theme of a windmill conspiracy is unreaistic. The only clever twist is the ending!
