Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
If you like football, then the “Playmakers” series is going to have a lot of appeal. The series details the exploits of rookie players in the NFL and Colin is particularly impressive. He has an incredible throwing arm which the first full-page photograph illustrates, including his many tattoos. A biracial child adopted by white parents Colin has made them and himself proud. He aspired to be a quarterback for the 49ers team since he was nine when he was asked as part of a school assignment what he wanted to be. He could punt, kick, and pass and was an outstanding player in high school in multiple sports and was even drafted by the Chicago Cubs to be a pitcher, but that was not his dream. So he was selected to play for the University of Nevada even though the coach had only seen him play basketball. He excelled and after high school he was a second round draft pick by his favorite team the San Francisco 49ers. He kept the bench warm his first season, but when the star quarterback was injured, he stepped in and before too long he was leading his team to Super Bowl XLVII. While they lost, it was an incredible ride for his team and Kaepernick proved his mettle. The book is filled with action photos and play-by-play descriptions from key games. It is an easy read and therefore is on the lower end of the middle reader age level, but due to the subject matter, the book could be used in higher grades and ESOL classes. The backmatter includes a section entitled “Fun Facts and Quotes, Web Links, a Glossary, Index and Further Resources.” Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot; Ages 8 up.
