Overview

Best-selling author and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges and journalist Laila Al-Arian spent the past year interviewing over fifty veterans to expose the patterns of the occupation in Iraq. The testimonies of these soldiers—many of who remain deeply traumatized by their experiences—uncover how the very conduct of the war and occupation have turned the American forces into agents of terror for most Iraqis.

Collateral Damage is organized around key military operations—Convoys, Checkpoints, Detentions, Raids, Suppressive Fire, and “Hearts and Minds.” Military convoys traveling at tremendous speeds through towns have become trains of death. Civilians are routinely run over or shot to death. Soldiers fire upon Iraqi vehicles with impunity at checkpoints. Late-night detentions based on shoddy intelligence terrify women, traumatize children, and radicalize the young men caught in their dragnet.

These soldiers have found the moral courage to speak out about the true nature of a war that has become one long, unchecked atrocity, and has given rise to the instability, sectarian violence and chaos that we witness today in Iraq.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

This is one disturbing and devastating audiobook. Hedges and Al-Arian don't hold back, providing the listener with many detailed accounts of brutal death and destruction inflicted upon Iraqi civilians by U.S. forces. But what makes their work so profound and heartfelt is that most of their information comes from the U.S. military itself. Through their interviews and research, it becomes apparent that this culture of disdain and disregard for Iraqis and their possessions resides at the top and filters down through the ranks with dreadful result, thus prolonging and continuing to fuel the war. Lloyd James has a gentle but solid voice that invokes the solemnity of the larger ramifications. Listeners will be moved by the restraint and resolve in his voice as he recounts some of the more disastrous events. He weaves back and forth from the prose to the dialogue with ease and detectable transition. A Nation Books hardcover (Reviews, Apr. 21). (July)

    Hearts and Minds

Reading this book will help you understand what life in Iraq is like if you don't live in the Green Zone.Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges interviewed 50 Iraqi war veterans to understand how the ongoing occupation affects Iraqi civilians. The chapters are organized around different types of military operation such as convoys, checkpoints, detentions, raids etc. The eyewitness narratives effectively convey the tactical realities of conducting war in Iraq, and the effect that the horrific situations have on the mostly young troops. One example given is that convoys are under orders never to stop (for fear of I.E.D.'s being detonated) even if children are playing on the roads. The harsh realities described make the reader examine whether the personal suffering is justified by the larger strategic objectives.

    I Also Recommend:

Tangible feel for the war, our soldiers and the Iraqi people

I have always been frustrated by the lack of attention to the Iraqi people in arguments for or against the war. This book tells part of the story of the impact the American invasion and occupation has had on the population.
Brief and readable, Collateral Damage can be finished in one sitting, but I found breaking it up a bit helpful to absorb the impact. It is highly organized and well documented.
Collateral Damage takes a close, hard look at some of the realities on the ground in Iraq. The testimonies and stories elucidate the moral distortions of war, and how even people with good intentions can be drawn to horrible decisions. It also details the un-American strategies of the Bush administration, including blatant disregard for long term diplomatic consequences for using such barbaric methods.
I judge myself to be much more informed ¿on a feelings level¿ about the war for having read this important book. While certainly challenging and requiring a stomach for some trauma, it is not simply morbid. It is a book every American should read.
