Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Why would someone want to read a book about collecting things? Most of us don't know that we may unintentionally already be collecting certain things. Maybe it's a new comic book when we go to the bookstore, or getting a souvenir from every place we've visited. While these may be normal occurrences they really are shades of being a collector. Written in a practical, straightforward language, this is easily a book for all ages, not just the intended four to eight year olds. Many elementary and middle school classroom assignments include discussing and/or displaying a collection of choice. This book offers many suggestions about how that can be done attractively and in some cases—free. The text is interspersed with facts on collecting and tips that are interesting and informative. One example of an interesting collection is Graham Barker's collection of navel fluff. Mr. Barker also encourages everyone to create unique collections. Being a librarian, I was especially impressed with the chapter about organization. Not only is categorizing important, but the authors also present the necessity of preservation for the more serious collector. While items for preservation may be costly, the advantage to having your collection for a long time is worth any amount of money. Also included is a section about Internet collecting and finding ways to share your collections with others. The illustrations are attractive and add to the friendliness of reading this book. 2001, Price Stern Sloan, $6.99. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Elizabeth Young
