Rupert Chawner Brooke (1887-1915) was an English poet and soldier, known for his patriotic war sonnets about the First World War. A gifted literary figure, the handsome Brooke belonged to several literary groups and boasted of a number of love affairs, with both men and women. After the outbreak of the Great War, Brooke was commissioned into the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as a temporary Sub-Lieutenant. He sailed for the Mediterranean in early 1915, but developed sepsis from an infected mosquito bite and died on April 15, 1915.
