Read an Excerpt

I was getting along fine with Mama, Papa-Daddy and Uncle Rondo until my sister Stella=Rondo just separated from her husband and came back home again. Mr. Whitaker! Of course I went with Mr. Whitaker first, when he first appeared here in China Grove, taking "Pose Youself" photos, and Stella-Rondo broke us up. Told him I was one-sided. Bigger on one side than the other, which is a deliberate, calculated falsehood: I'm the same. Stella-Rondo is exactly twelve months to the day younger than I am and for that reason she's spoiled.
—from "Why I Live at the P.O."

There are a lot of different kinds of fiction writers, so it's really impossible to claim one as the 'Best,' but for my money Eudora Welty wrote some of the best fiction America has ever produced. From a pure storytelling level, Eudora Welty can only be equaled, never bested, and even then only rarely. Maybe you don't get the action and genre fireworks found elsewhere, but you get more humanity, though without gross sentimentality. Her characters are the most precisely drawn I have ever read and her plots are real, never overbearing. She will always be at the top of my list, bar none.

This will now be the fourth time I've purchased this book for myself in my lifetime. I give it away, or lose it all over. I would buy it again just for the story 'Powerhouse'. One of my favorites in the English language. Maybe I be back for a fifth. I hope they sell this in the afterlife. I'd buy it there too!

I was first introduced to Eudora Welty in college and I find her writing a continual joy. Its a must for teen reading, or any reader in any season of their life.
