Library Journal
Photography as an art form has come of age, but collecting this reproducible media can be tricky. Photography curator and instructor Badger (Brighton Univ., UK) has carefully laid out the guidelines for creating a photography collection. The topics covered include building a collection, buying and selling photographs, and displaying and caring for prints. The narrative section of the book, though somewhat plodding, is loaded with information for the collector. Top collectors and gallery owners are quoted throughout, sharing their views on photography and collecting. The final sections of the book comprise useful lists and information on the history of photography, including a chronology and glossary on terms and types of photography. Also included is a list of 250 of the most important names in today's collector's market as determined by their importance in the history of photography and their track records in the marketplace and auction houses. Finally, there is a list of galleries and dealers throughout the world, broken down by country, where collectors can buy photography. Illustrations (80 in color or duotone) highlight works by Annie Liebovitz, Nan Goldin, Alfred Stieglitz, and others. Overall, this is a very useful book in the history and collection of photography. Recommended for academic libraries and large public libraries.-Sandy Knowles, Henderson Cty. P.L., Hendersonville, NC Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
