Overview

Prospective college students and their parents have been relying on Loren Pope's expertise since 1995, when he published the first edition of this indispensable guide. This new edition profiles 41 colleges—all of which outdo the Ivies and research universities in producing performers, not only among A students but also among those who get Bs and Cs. Contents include:

  • Evaluations of each school's program and "personality"
  • Candid assessments by students, professors, and deans
  • Information on the progress of graduates

This new edition not only revisits schools listed in previous volumes to give readers a comprehensive assessment, it also addresses such issues as homeschooling, learning disabilities, and single-sex education.

    A groundbreaking book.

As a part time college counselor, I can say that this is a great book. There are thousands of great colleges in the US, but sadly everyone only talks about 20 of them. If you are sending a kid to a college to have bragging rights, don't bother with this book. But if you want your kid to have a great education, get this and read it. I read it in one night. I couldn't put it down. In this book, you learn which colleges really teach. How they can take a B student and make them a huge success in life. As a parent, you owe it to yourself to read this. We toured some of the 40. The kids there LOVED them. Universally, the kids loved the small classes, professors who really cared and the great experience. And, yes, my kid will be starting at one of the 40 in a few months. We could not be happier. She could not be happier. I encourage everyone interested in giving their kid a great educatiomn to read this. It will open your eyes to some great colleges.

About as good as it get...

This book introduces many good liberal arts colleges to you. The 40 are spread across the U.S. so you can look for a college in a specific region etc. In each review, you get the student's point of view, statistics, the profs & president's view, and, finally, Mr. Pope's view of the school. This book is about as good as it can get -unless you decided to get an interview. Also, I feel that this book is a little outdated and a little bias. I mean, this book is based on Mr. Pope's idea of a good school. Although, he does have a very good idea.

I cannot say enough good things about this book

My oldest child is attending the large state university and is blossoming there, but my second child is a totally different person, with different interests and abilities. Although she has said that she will probably attend the same university as her sister, I know it is not a good fit for her. I cannot tell you how fortunate I feel to have learned of this book (from a woman sitting next to me at a seminar) -- the colleges it profiles offer many promising possibilities for my second child and she is reading it as I write this review. This is a gem of a guide to many great little colleges located throughout our nation. I highly recommend this book to students and parents.

This book is worth checking out!

My daughter is searching for the right 'fit' and Loren Pope's book has been tremendously helpful. The big state university is not the best choice given her desire to get a strong liberal arts education before medical school. Pope's book introduced her to many options -- schools that excel at feeding the mind of the young adult. I can't imagine embarking on a college search without first reading this book. Hooray for the small schools with a big heart!

    Great! And really helpful....

With good grades and solid SAT scores, I still had a lot of trouble deciding where to apply to college. I had visited 5 colleges already in the Northeast and been unimpressed with what I had seen. Yet, Pope's book opened my eyes to new colleges in new locations. I have been accepted by Beloit (WI) and Kalamazoo (MI) and could not be happier. Sometimes one has to look a little further to find what one is looking for!! Good luck!

    I FOUND MY COLLEGE

Many people are searching for a school. They take the IVY league as the end all, be all for schools. I decided to read Lauren's book and found my school: Millsaps College. Nothing has more profoundly changed my life .

Wish I'd Read This Book Before I Chose A College

Even though I have a BA already I was curious what schools were listed. I was extremely surprised to discover colleges that I'd heard of, but never realized there immense value in education. I was a B student in H.S. and only applied to one state college. Even though I got a good education I believe this book could have helped me immensely in finding a college that looked at my other abilities. I've recommended this book to my brother in law who is a high school junior. He is so smart but is unable to keep a strong B average. This book provides 'hope' that a great college, with wonderful teachers, and a diverse student body IS out there: even if you don't have straight A's. Great for parents who are afraid their child will need to settle for any college.
