Foreword

The American edition of the Collins Gem Thesaurus, which was first published in 1990, has proved to be an immensely popular language resource. It allows you to look up a word and find a useful selection of alternatives that can replace it. It is, therefore, tremendously helpful when you are trying to find different ways of expressing yourself, as well as being an invaluable aid for crosswords and puzzles.

Collins thesauruses are designed to give the user as much help as possible in finding the right word for any occasion. Because the Gem Thesaurus has its main entry words arranged in A-Z form, you can go straight to the word you want without having to resort to an index, just as if you were looking it up in a dictionary. In this new edition, the number of main entry words has been increased, giving you an even greater chance of finding the word you want. At the same time, the list of alternative words (synonyms) for each main entry has been reviewed so that the most helpful alternatives are included in each case. The new edition also takes account of recent changes in the language, with terms like gridlock, dweeb, and Internet included as main entry words for the first time, and words like twenty-four-seven, phat, wannabe, and scuzzbucket being found among the synonyms.

This new edition further demonstrates Collins' commitment to helping the user. As part of an innovative design, key synonyms have been put in capital letters and placed first in each list. This layout enables you to see at once which sense of the word is being referred to,which is particularly helpful when a main entry word has a number of different senses. It also gives you an idea of which synonym is the closest alternative to the word you have looked up.

These innovations mean that the American edition of the Collins Gem Thesaurus continues to provide the user with a treasury of useful words arranged in the most helpful format possible.
