A science fiction romance set in today's world

A UFO collides with a US spy plane at 150,000 feet, but survives. US military intelligence track the path of the UFO to a beach in Northern England, before they lose sight of it. After a call from the Whitehouse to Downing Street, MI6 are tasked to work with the CIA to investigate the UFO. But with the UFO now gone, the only clue to its whereabouts is a mysterious cat woman seen by a witness on the beach.

The morning after the incident, a young woman wakes up in a service station after sleeping there overnight. Traumatic memories of her escape, from the night before, flood into her mind. Now her only chance of returning home is to find a scientist who shares her field of research, and persuade him to help her.

Meet the Author

I grew up in York, graduated in economics at Hull University, and then moved to London to make a career as a charted accountant working for one of the world's largest firms of chartered accountants (PwC). Over the years I established a reputation as one of the firm's global experts in the leasing and asset finance industry and published a number of books and articles on that subject.

I am now retired living in Bedfordshire and pursuing what I love most - writing. I love sci fi movies and books, and I love writing. It was therefore not surprising that my first novel published would have a science fiction theme.

    Rough draft?

I'm a huge fan of sci-fi and romance, like Hunger Games and my favorite, Divergent. This book, Collision, received a 5 star rating, and for the life of me can't understand why. Although I like the idea of the story, I suffered through a ridiculous amount of grammatial errors, misused words and became rather fruststrated that I was reading a rough draft and not the edited version of the book. As a newcomer to the Nook, I can only hope this is not the norm.

Collision by J.M.J. Williamson is the story of Ben, a researcher of particle physics. Out for a jog one night, it initially appears he's in the wrong place at the wrong time as he catches a glimpse of a UFO before it vanishes. The military descends upon him and whisks him away for questioning, leaving him unaware that for Elle, the pilot of the UFO, he was in exactly the right place, at the right time. CAI, her Computer Artificial Intelligence, identified him as one who possibly had enough knowledge to help her solve the mystery of Tachyons, a solution she desperately needs before she can time travel to the day her parents are killed in a car accident. With limited time, they must evade Russian agents, the US Military, and MI6, all the while trying to perfect the equations of Tachyon.

I liked this story, and though it is a sci-fi romance, J.M.J. Williamson didn't overwhelm the plot with too much technical information or equations. The budding romance between Ben and Elle wasn't overshadowed by the layered plot of time travel. It unfolds nicely throughout the story, and was handled well without graphic descriptions. There is a very nice balance here with all aspects, and you get a really good sense of all the characters involved. It's the good character building and an entirely feasible, well laid out plot that moves the story along at a good pace despite the changes of POV that occur often. Collision will be enjoyed by sci-fi and romance readers alike, as it has inter-woven elements that are appealing to both genres without being overpowering in either aspect.
