Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Megan Lynn Isaac
Eleven-year-old Colm looks with relief to the end of two weeks of forced companionship with his antagonistic fourteen-year-old cousin, nicknamed The Brute, but a late plane forces Colm's family to find shelter at the Red House Hotel in Ireland. At first the out-of-the way hotel seems deserted, but two other groups of travelers quickly arrive. The first is a pair of detectives working against their better judgment to track a stranger for an unsavory customer. The second is Professor Peter Drake who is tracing an ancient treasure called the Lazarus Key—rumored to provide eternal life; he is accompanied by his girlfriend and his teenage daughter, Lauryn. What begins as a realistic tale about family relationships suddenly seems to be borrowing characters from Indiana Jones style adventures and hard-boiled detective tales. As the evening's events in the hotel grow more ominous, all three groups of travelers realize that the mysterious Lazarus Key is both real and dangerous. As some race to acquire it, Colm, the Brute and Lauryn join forces to destroy it. The chase takes the intrepid but ill-informed trio through a haunted wood, a hidden tomb, and straight into the arms of a vicious zombie. Although action-packed, the relationship among the unusual plot lines always feels forced. And as the stakes rise, the wry tone that opens the volume and the realistic rivalry between Colm and Brute disappears. Reviewer: Megan Lynn Isaac

A contemporary adventure story set in Ireland. Colm shares nothing in common with his cousin 'the Brute' and can't wait until their holiday together is at an end. However the strange events that occur during a night's stay in a eerie and almost deserted hotel in the countryside forces them to work together. Is the American granddaughter of the hotel owner, whom the Brute seems to have taken quite a liking to, with them or against them? Can they save Colm's parents from whomever it is that threatens them? This is an thoroughly entertaining and humorous tale aimed at the preteen reader.
