Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This well-organized reference features Colombia in five chapters, each prefaced by a fast-fact page. The sections include Explore Colombia, The Land, Climate, and Wildlife, Colombia's History and Government, Colombia's Economy, and People, Culture, and Daily Life. Even though its value for social studies and geography is obvious, this is also a good source for science. Readers can learn about the considerable volcanic activity in Colombia, and that it is a country that is home to many animals, including capybaras, jaguars, and manatees. Over 1,500 bird species are found there as well. In the economy section, the importance of Colombia's largest legal crop, coffee, is discussed. Coal, petroleum products, and fresh cut flowers are other sources of income for the people of Colombia. Even though there is a tourism section, the dangers of Colombia are presented in a way that young readers can understand. The author makes it clear that drug trafficking and guerilla groups hurt this country's tourist industry. The book concludes with pages about Colombia's national symbols, a timeline from 1499-2000, suggested books for further information, Internet sites, and a detailed index. Other books in this "Countries and Cultures" series include Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Haiti, Japan, Kenya, and Mexico. 2002, Capstone Press,
