Tightly written texts offer balanced presentations, detailing various aspects of being a Colonial woman in a patriarchal society and the conditions that slaves endured in both the southern and northern colonies. Insightful comparisons of rural versus urban life enlighten and inform readers. Photographs of reenactors from Colonial Williamsburg and Old Salem and historical paintings from New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and other collections enrich the texts. Of special interest are the biographical sketches of notable people such as Anne Bradstreet, poet, and Margaret Brent, first female Colonial lawyer, in Colonial Women; and Phillis Wheatley, African poet, in Slave Family.
