Editorial Reviews
From The Critics
Reviewer: Steven H. Goldberg, MD(Kaiser Permanente)Description: This third edition (first edition 1983) serves as an excellent companion to the classic Dermatology in Internal Medicine (Fitzpatrick) and as a stand-alone dermatologic atlas and management guide. There are more than 1,000 pages providing succinct summaries of all the cutaneous disorders as well as more than 400 high-quality color photographs. Each individual synopsis lists the epidemiology, etiology, history, physical exam findings, variations, differential diagnosis, laboratory exam findings, pathophysiology, course, and management of the dermatologic disease.
Purpose: This book serves as a well-differentiated atlas and management guide for general dermatology.
Audience: The target audience includes all primary care providers and students as well the dermatologist who wishes for a handbook for a quick overview of a skin disease.
Features: The book begins with a "how-to" approach to a patient with skin lesions and follows each disorder with this consistent format. The described diseases include the full range encountered in medical practice from both inflammatory to neoplastic conditions. All conditions are illustrated with large high-quality color photographs of classic dermatologic findings. It is very up-to-date with new sections on mucocutaneous manifestations of HIV, the most recent recommendations on the treatment of malignant melanoma, and the newer drugs recently approved by the FDA. It uniquely contains appendixes and indexes that encompass various approaches to the evaluation and management of special situations, from the differential diagnosis of the generalized itch without skin findings, to "the differential diagnosis of rashes in the acutely ill febrile patient."
Assessment: This outstanding comprehensive general dermatologic textbook should be on the shelves of all primary care providers and dermatologists who require a quick refresher on any skin disease.
