Description: This is the third edition this histology atlas. The second edition was published in 1998.
Purpose: The author states that this is an atlas which is intended to serve as a supplement to the student's study of histology in the laboratory. To facilitate this use, the images are larger than is usually found in such an atlas — some are about 4' x 6", others about 5" x 7". This is a reasonable purpose and the author has fulfilled his objectives."
Audience: This book is intended for medical or dental students taking histology. It would be of little use for students whose course does not have a typical histology laboratory. The author is knowledgeable in the field having published two earlier editions of this atlas.
Features: This atlas is very similar to the earlier editions except with regard to the inclusion of a new chapter on blood cell development and a slightly expanded self-assessment chapter at the end of the atlas. A brief introduction to tissues, solid organs, and hollow organs would have been helpful at the relevant places in the atlas. For the most part, the specimens used for the micrographs are good, but the photography and printing leave much to be desired. Essentially all the micrographs have far too strong a bluish or yellowish or orangeish background cast. For reasons that are not clear, the author has included the photographic magnification with each figure rather than the more appropriate and widely used practice of stating the microscope magnification at which the micrograph was taken. This may be a source of confusion to the student. The self-assessment chapter has no stated questions with the pairs (or triplets) of micrographs, leaving the student to decide what question to answer. This is likely to be of little value to the student.
Assessment: The only significant strengths of this atlas are its large format images and the general accuracy of the information. Its major shortcomings are the mediocre image quality; the paucity of explanatory information; minimal amount of labeling of the images; and unusual use of magnification information. There are a number of other histology atlases that would better serve the needs of medical and dental students: Kerr's Atlas of Functional Histology (Mosby, 1999), the 3rd edition of Gartner and Hiatt's Color Atlas of Histology (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2000), and the 4th edition of Wheater's Functional Histology: A Text and Colour Atlas (W.B. Saunders, 2000) by Young and Heath.

This is a comprehensive color atlas of histology. About 90% of the micrographs are color light micrographs, 8% to 9% transmission electron micrographs, and 1% to 2% are scanning electron micrographs. The author intended to provide a high quality visual atlas of histology. His objectives are worthy and he succeeded handsomely. There are many other such books. The atlas would be useful for first- and second-year medical or dental students. The topic is treated by a surfeit of histology atlases. The author, who is unknown to me, doesn't state for whom the atlas is intended. This atlas concentrates on the images presented, not on text or labels. As such, it does a better service than books marketed as atlases that try to impart too much descriptive information. The selection, preparation, photography, and choice of stains and specimens make this a top-notch atlas. The table of contents and index are adequate. The spiral binding and large format of the book are quite appropriate. Most of the plates are larger than is typical of other photographic atlases, making it more useful than its competitors. This is a high quality, useful atlas that should be part of the collection of any health sciences library.
