Overview

Ornamental trees, shrubs, and flowers are an important component of modern life, from houseplants to trees in public parks. This authoritative and beautifully illustrated account provides a unique source of reference for all practitioners involved in the recognition, biology, and control of the pests of ornamental crops. The author recommends appropriate control measures, including the environmentally conscious methods of handpicking insects, eliminating insect hiding places, and using certain pesticide and chemical controls. Entomologists, horticulturists, pest control specialists, integrated pest management (IPM) practitioners, growers, students, and teachers will all find this to be a thorough and comprehensive text.

Library Journal
Entomologist Alford, formerly with the British Ministry of Agriculture, has produced an extensive identification guide of garden pests (insects, mites, and other miscellaneous animal pests), with descriptions, illustrations (including 1,069 color photos and 1,042 line drawings), and general recommendations for pest control-though the names of specific pesticides are not given. The focus is on pests found in the British Isles and northern continental Europe, and though many of these pests appear in North America as well, the text is not ideally suited to gardeners here. Surprisingly, earthworms and birds are listed as pests-a consideration that some may find out of step with ecologically sound gardening practices. An optional purchase, best considered as a supplement to more regionally relevant (and environmentally appropriate) pest guides for North American gardeners, such as Mary Louise Flint's Pests of the Garden and Small Farm: A Grower's Guide to Using Less Pesticide (2d ed.) or Anna Carr's Rodale's Color Handbook of Garden Pests.-Brian Lym, City Coll. of San Francisco Lib.
