Overview

Inspired by a true story, Color Me Butterfly follows four generations of mothers and daughters—haunted by a common specter of domestic abuse—as they discover the strength, hope, and courage to survive.

The last thing Eloise Bingham wanted was to leave the comforts of her South Carolina home and family. But at the end of World War II, the young wife follows her husband, Isaac, to Philadelphia—only to experience his sinister and violent temper. Eloise’s children—and their children and grandchildren—will face their own trials over the next sixty years: Mattie, who has lived in her mother Eloise’s shadow, finds it takes a life-changing tragedy to help her break free; Lydia, Mattie’s strong-willed daughter, summons the resolve to rise above the cycle of abuse; and finally, Treasure, Lydia’s lively daughter, has the chance to be the first to escape her family’s destructive legacy.

It will take unconditional love, old-fashioned family values, faith, and fearless determination—already embedded in each woman’s DNA—to triumph over a life plagued with unspeakable pain.

    From hurt to hero!

This was one of the best novels that I've ever read. I couldn't put it down. By the end, I was so inspired to tell my own story. Thank you for sharing with the world and for the lives that you will change through this book!

Recommended - great book for panel debates

This was a very fast read. Our group read in less than two weeks. Every chapter pulled you in to want to know what would happen next. The surprising thing, was that it took so many generations to evolve from the same negativity the women seemed to experience with men. It is an excellent book open for discussion on how to deal with domestic physical, verbal, and mental abuse.

    An absolute page turner

I believe the highest honor a book can net is when its characters live on in the reader's mind long after the final page has been turned. This book has earned said honor. Easily the most engaging and rewarding literary experience I've had all year. I'd love to see this book adapted into a screenplay.

    Great Honest Read

Where do I start? This book is AMAZING!!! At first, I was skeptical when it this was suggested that I read this. You can feel the strength emulating from each page. I often read "fairytale" fictions opting to escape my harsh reality (i.e. bills, responsibilities, marriage.) I applaud you L.Y. Marlow for sharing your this story of breaking the vicious cycle many African American women continue without even knowing. This is an suthor that I will most definitely watch for other releases!

    Recommend

I found the story difficult to read in that generations of women in this family endured so much abuse from men who claimed to love them. It seemed as if the cycle would go on forever. I cringed when these women returned to their abusers and just accepted their lives as though nothing could be done. I don't think I could have been as forgiving of a father who beat his children and then abandoned the family and in the end, expected to be welcomed back because he was ill and had nowhere else to go. But the story finally brings hope that future generations have realized their worth and will never allow themselves to be victims.
