Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Mark S. Talamonti, MD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This is the first edition of a concise yet thorough text dealing with clinical aspects of colorectal cancer. Topics range from preclinical detection, including screening programs, to the management of premalignant conditions, such as advanced polyps, and includes chapters on laparoscopic surgery and adjuvant care. Also included is a chapter on recommended surveillance patterns.
Purpose: The purpose, according to the author, is to provide a reference text on clinical management issues in colorectal cancer. The author also attempts to provide an overview of technologic advances, such as laparoscopic colon surgery and cryosurgery for liver metastases. These objectives are clearly and concisely met.
Audience: The author's targeted audiences are clinical practitioners and trainees with a focus on colorectal cancer. I agree that this is the proper audience for this book, and I believe that the editor and the authors of the chapters attempted to directly address this audience. The editor is a well-respected British surgeon known for his expertise in colorectal cancer.
Features: This is a well-organized, clear, and concise text with thorough discussions and excellent references. It is organized in a format to cover the breadth of clinical issues in colorectal cancer. Chapters are well placed and comprehensive. Excellent references and great tables are included in each chapter. Diagrams are few but adequate when placed within each chapter. The book is quite nicely organized and well presented.
Assessment: This is a well-organized and very complete book written with the goal of thoroughly covering major clinical aspects in the care of patients with colorectal cancer. I was impressed by the concise yet comprehensive quality of this book. I would rank this as a fine contribution and recommend it for the practicing clinician.
