Colored pencils are remarkably versatile, providing endless possible effects, whether on paper, wood, or fabric. Moreover, pencils cost less than other media and require few accessories. Angelo, the author/producer of 16 instructional videos and four books, intends Exploring Colored Pencils for all levels, but beginners will find the book intimidating. Intermediate and advanced students will, however, be rewarded with a rich array of ideas and styles. Professional artist and teacher Cook's Coloured Pencils is a good, inexpensive volume for personal use but at 64 pages is quite brief. Libraries have better, more comprehensive choices, such as Gildow and Newton's Colored Pencil Solution Book. Accomplished professionals, the authors cover crucial beginning topics, such as setup, technique, color theory, texture, and light in depth. Their format is crisp and easy to understand, even when concerned with advanced concepts like liquefying pigment, building up foundation color, and the effects of water reflections, coarse linen, or intricate lace. I have read a lot of books on the subject of colored pencil techniques and this is absolutely the best. It has tips and tricks that I haven't seen anywhere else but are absolute necessities if you want to the best you can be. This book teaches you step by step how to do those things that you've been trying to do and can't quite get right. It sits at my work station within easy reach at all times. Haaaaazaaaa! Great jobs ladies.
