Children's Literature - Barbara Hall
There are coloring books, and there are Coloring Books! This particular Coloring Book! is designed by Herve Tullet who is—take your choice—the "prince" or "king" of French books for the preschooler. His earlier, award-winning fetes of creativity include "Imagine," "The Five Senses," and "The Scribble Book." This, his latest work, will have children coloring, laughing, learning, and, quite literally, thinking outside the box. Tullet's images, stretched across hundreds of pages as joyously as some tour of sculptor Alexander Calder's famed circus, are a buoyant sharing of contemporary art principles. Art-loving adults will recognize elements of Franz Kline, Adolph Gottlieb, Ferdinand Leger, Antoine de Sainte Exupery's "Little Prince" drawings, and Dr. Seuss. Challenges to color accompany most of the black and white spreads. These irresistible invitations are English translations from the author's French. As such, they evoke the child-like whimsy of, say, translations of "The Red Balloon," France's beloved children's book and film. At essence this book inspires, engages, teaches, and also tickles. It has been said that it is ideal for long car rides—yes—or any other excuse for a delicious romp of young minds, hands, hearts, and spirits. Reviewer: Barbara Hall
