Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Welsh
This is another book in the "Colors of" series that beautifully shows and describes insects through the senses. Take a trip through flower fields as a busy bumblebee, lovely ladybug or beautiful blue morpho butterfly. Find out how fast purple tiger beetles and Monarch butterflies move. Measure the tiny body of the whitefly and the impressive wingspan of the pink elephant hawk moth. Find out the favorite food of water scorpions and lily beetles. Large text and detailed pictures disguise the multitude of information the book provides. Children won't even realize they are learning about pollination, measurement, camouflage, migration and insect self-preservation. The book is appropriate for second graders if read aloud or independent third grade readers. The pictures are large, colorful and help young readers better understand the text. The color words are bold and painted the color they are describing to help younger readers learn their colors. The glossary in the back of the book will help younger readers understand more difficult terms such as "pigment" and "species." There are companion book suggestions as well as safe internet sites for research. Readers who enjoy this book might also enjoy others in the "Colors of" set, which includes insects, sports, the ocean and weather. Reviewer: Heather Welsh
