Colors of My Heart

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Kerry Dexter
Sharon Burch's original songs are rooted in her experiences as a Navajo woman. For her third album, the award-winning songstress who has been called the Native American Judy Collins for the beauty of her voice explores the relationship of mother and child "Don't Be Afraid" and for the first time interweaves English and Navajo lyrics in her tales of sharing family traditions "Pigeon Corn". Often accompanied only by guitar and Native American drums, Burch expands her sound on this collection by drawing in the talents of experimental guitarist William Eaton, southwestern percussion master Will Clipman, and cellist Rachel Harris "All Is Beautiful," "Colors of My Heart". The ensemble complements her acoustic guitar and vocals, creating songs that are direct and yet tonally complex. In the three years since TOUCH THE SWEET EARTH, it's clear that Burch has continued to focus her musical vision of sharing the life of the Navajo community with her neighbors.
Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
Navajo singer/songwriter Sharon Burch continues the journey she began on YAZZIE GIRL and her award-winning TOUCH THE SWEET EARTH. These songs, sung in both Navajo and English, express the innocence of the relationship between a mother and her daughter, as well as the relationship a woman has with the earth. All songs appeal, with catchy tunes, like a mother might sing to her child: "Don't Be Afraid," "Little Star Shine," "Cradle Song," and "Spotted Horse." Some of these are real toe-tappers, some are suitable to sing as rounds, and you'll probably want to join in -- even if you don't speak a word of Navaho. Burch is joined by Will Clipman percussion, William Eaton synth guitar and bass, Claudia Tulip flute, Allen Ames violin, and Rachel Harris cello. The singer also colorfully overdubs infectious harmonies over her own lovely voice. The exceptionally excellent CD booklet includes easy-to-read lyrics, translations, and color photographs of Burch and her relatives at home in New Mexico. COLORS OF MY HEART is a joy!
