Colour the Small One, her U.S. solo debut, is a moody, affecting collection that marries the artist's talents as a singer-songwriter with her ear for cozy, occasionally unsettling electronic soundscapes; in other words, it's similar in appeal to music by Beth Orton, Portishead's Beth Gibbons, or Frou Frou chanteuse Imogen Heap. Unsurprisingly, given Zero 7's willowy R&B leanings, Sia's vocals are colored by subtle soul shadings, yet there's also a nakedness to her delivery. On the aforementioned "Breathe Me" -- a piano-driven, synth-gilded ballad of aching beauty -- she coos, "Be my friend / Hold me, wrap me up / Unfold me / I am small / I'm needy / Warm me up / And breathe me," her voice crackling, barely able to get out all the words. Whereas that track ends with synths and strings reaching a towering crescendo, the next track, the mournful, acoustic guitar–keyed "The Bully," strips the music away to reveal the sweet though naturally melancholy coo in Sia's vocals. A bit of Nelly Furtado flutters through the whimsical, vaguely jazzy "Butterflies," and by disc's end, Sia seems to have done a 180 from the agony of "Breathe Me": On the relatively spunky, acid jazzy "Where I Belong," she repossesses the R&B diva within to sing, and re-sing, the refrain, "So don't treat me bad, just be glad I am strong / I know where I belong." Sounds like we haven't heard the last from Sia.

    God Awful - Run Away

    I work at a store that is required by home office to play this album. It is so bad that I was compelled to come here and tell you about it. I don't even know where to begin... let's see, how about her 'singing' voice. Best compared to a harmonica played with your nose (listen to -that- note in the song Numb if you don't understand what that sounds like. You'll know which note it is...) Her voice is amateur at best, infuriating at worst (which is most of the time). The lyrics? How about fifth generation Jewel meets Fiona Apple. If that sounds like praise, it isn't. It is very much open mic night type stuff, the kind of bad writing that will strain your eye muscles as you're likely to roll them at least fifty times during the course of the album. "She makes him sweet po-tat-oe...." "How can she become the psychic that she longs to be to understand him?" Those are just two gems from one song. I'd give you more, but half the time she sings in an incoherent mush-mouth. This is very, very bad stuff. Navel-gazing, self obsessed, humorless. You will wonder why someone this bad could ever get a record contract.

    Sia's music is gorgeous. The songs build up slowly and wrap themselves around you. Very emotional and musically stunning.

    Breathe Me

    I bought this CD because I was intrigued with Sia, after having watched the finale of HBO's "Six Feet Under"last year. Sorry to say, it's the only appealing song on the entire disc. The remainder of the CD is, shall I say,just plain lousy.

    Nope. It's just plain bad.

    To say that this is not for the timid listener is dead on. This 'music' is for people who have no fear when it comes to what they'll digest. I agree, this isn't Top 40 stuff, but that doesn't make it good. On the contrary, it is very, very bad. Her style is just a ripoff of better, actually talented musicians. She mopes, she whines, she mopes some more. To say it's delicate and ethereal is just another way of saying there's pretty much nothing there. This trend of whiny "artists" like Coldplay and Sia making a living out of organs playing in the background will hopefully die soon. Just because you have an organ playing in the back doesn't make it 'deep'. Sia may 'create', but she leaves the regurgitation to anyone with an ear for actual music.

    Beautiful

    Sia is not for the timid music listener. This album touches deeply with its ethereal quality. This is not for those who worship the top forty. Haven't we heard enough of that anyway! Kudos to artists that create rather than regurgitate.
