Meet the Author
José Luis Merino (nom de guerre, Ramiro Vázquez) began his political involvement early as a young activist in the labor movement. As one of the military leaders of the FMLN guerrilla force, he was a key figure during the 12-year civil war and one of the central figures of the FMLN. Following the 1992 peace accords, he played a crucial role in the FMLN’s transition to becoming a major political party. He succeeded Jorge Schafik Handal as the leader of the Salvadoran Communist Party and was the architect of the FMLN’s electoral victory in 2009. Today he is a deputy to the Central American Parliament.
