School Library Journal - School Library JournalGr 3-4-- A young sea monster named Angus is separated from his group during a fierce storm. When he wakes up, he is in a land-locked Scottish loch with James, a terrier nipping his tail. Angus plans his return to the sea, an arduous trek over a rocky mountain. During the summer as he conditions for his escape, he befriends not only otters, James, and a cat, but also comes to know and love a young human, Fiona. Gradually, Angus learns to communicate with her as well as he does with animals. When the first snow of winter falls, he successfully scales the mountain to see and smell the sea and decides to return to his beloved friends. This slight fantasy is fast paced, although not wholly convincing. Dialogue slips in and out of the cadence of a Scottish accent, characters are one-dimensional, and the passage of time and the setting are contrived. That Angus gives up his seafaring life so easily is unsatisfying. For those who make the necessary leaps of faith, however, this sweet novel of friendship may hold some appeal. --Maria B.
