Overview

If you ask me, the ongoing bar boom is owed in large part—perhaps even entirely—to social media; Netflix, Apple TV, and other streaming entertainment; and online shopping. Seriously, what the hell do you need to leave your house for anymore? The bar is one of the last bastions of genuine human interaction. "Public houses" they were once called; it's a moniker that seems more and more deserving to be revived.

A neighborhood bar can become as comfortable as a second home or a memory best avoided—a wild evening half remembered and better forgotten. But what makes a particular bar special, better than the one just down the street? The answers vary considerably as writers share personal stories of drinking from watering holes far and wide, located from an island on the equator to the frigid windswept landscape of Antarctica.

Funny, smart, and poignant, this collection is an opportunity to be a fly on the wall in the comfort of your own home. Here is a chance to do some armchair drinking with Rosie Schaap, Jack Hitt, Jim Shepard, Duff McKagan, Laura Lippman, Andrew W.K., Craig Finn, Darin Strauss, and many more.
