Come on-a My House: The Very Best of Rosemary Clooney

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David McGee
One of the positive byproducts of the Sony/BMG merger is that these discs labeled "The Very Best Of" come close to living up to the title. With access to material from the vaults of both Columbia and RCA, the great Ms. Clooney's first two stops as a recording artist, this compilation's producers could deliver her most enduring work. The 14 tracks here are evenly divided between the career-launching, Mitch Miller/Al Ham-produced Columbia sides (1952-57) and Clooney's 1958-60 RCA landmarks. Although Miller saddled his young protégée with some featherweight novelties such as her 1952 debut, "Come On-A My House" (which Clooney took to the top of the charts for eight weeks --...

Although Miller saddled his young protégée with some featherweight novelties such as her 1952 debut, "Come On-A My House" (which Clooney took to the top of the charts for eight weeks -- other artists would die for such featherweight novelties) and "Botch-A-Me (Ba-Ba-Baciami Piccina)" (a No. 2 single for three weeks, also in '52), he also gave her more substantive fare that she turned into some of the dreamiest love songs of all time, such as "Tenderly" and "Hey There." Following Tony Bennett's lead, she also became one of the first pop artists to explore country music's crossover potential with a '52 chart-topping version of Hank Williams's "Half as Much." Moving to RCA, she struck up an intensely personal and professional relationship with arranger Nelson Riddle and became one of the premier romantic female vocalists of her time on the strength of hits such as "How Am I to Know?" and "By Myself." Two stirring duets with Bing Crosby are featured on the disc, as well as Rosie's swaggering take on "Mack the Knife." And oh, those luscious, string-rich Riddle arrangements!
All Music Guide - John Bush
A little brief at under 45 minutes, Come on-a My House: The Very Best of Rosemary Clooney includes most of the best of Clooney's Columbia hits (the title track, "This Ole House," "Botch-a-Me [Ba-Ba-Baciami Piccina]"), along with a few excellent album tracks ("Clap Hands! Here Comes Rosie," "How Am I to Know?"), but it pales in comparison next to her better retrospectives, including 16 Most Requested Songs, where listeners will find "Mambo Italiano" and "I Could Have Danced All Night."
