A great self help book for you and the community...a must read for the black race.

If you want honest upfront information and advice for the black community then you must read this book. Although everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I don't agree with every opinion in this book, I am more enlightened and involved in the black community after reading it. Mr. Cosby offers insight to some of the issues within our community as well as solutions to improve our race.

Excellent book for young people of today to read and get involved with what is going on in the world.

Bill Cosby has written a book that will enlighted anyone that reads it. It also opens up ideas and thoughts that need to be addressed today, especially among the afro american people. I think young people need to grab a hold of this book and read it cover to cover. You can tell that there has been much research before the book was written. Not every day you can read a book that tells you factual information about your race. It also has momemts that will lift your spirits and make you feel there is hope for the future.

"WE are a resilient people"... Come on, people!

    Where are we going?

Drs. Cosby & Poussaint definitely lay out what some might consider "dirty laundry." There are some great insights given on how we can heal some of the issues raised.

    So What's Next?

Bill Cosby is right on target with the issues but the question is: What's next? Not all of our impoverished are irresponsible in their heart but when you don't know the next step to take, when you don't have someone to encourage you to keep emotional stability, but also physically walk you through the process to achieve success, what else can you do?? How do you get there??? I work with juveniles who want better for themselves and can see the plan that we've mapped out for a changed and successful life, but when I have to return that youth back to the SAME NEIGHBORHOOD and SAME DEADBEAT PARENTS or the SAME POOR PARENTS, how can I REALLY make him believe that his success really is achievable? I know it is because I had that encouragement and examples before me, and I had people that cared and were adamant about my life's purpose coming to fruition, but they don't have that. So what's next for them? Who starts to map out this pathway we're speaking of in the book? There are two types of people in the poor neighborhoods: those who desire to get out but can't, and those who don't care to get out. We need to attack them both but we need to initially direct our energy towards those who truly desire to leave. It will be easy to help them because they already have the motive, they just need the means to make it happen!!! We know that most of these parents are not educated so how can we expect them to just up and make changes? In counseling youth, I've seen that many of them know very little about even the basic functions of life and this is because they're parents don't know as well. So while I'm teaching the child, WHO TEACHES THE PARENT? We have the opportunity to teach Life Skills here. It should almost be a REQUIREMENT to teach Life Skills to impoverished parents. You know POLITICS play a role in EVERYTHING AND NO ONE WANTS TO STEP UP AND SAY I'LL DO IT, OR I'LL PAY FOR IT!! THAT'S THE SAD WORLD WE LIVE IN AND THAT'S WHY WE'RE HELD BACK TODAY!! SO WHAT'S NEXT? Mr. Cosby, WHAT'S NEXT?

    My thoughts . . .

I agree with the reviewer from 10/28/07 who says the one thing that worries them is that the book will not reach the audience it is intended for. Those people are too busy invesing their money on hip-hop flavored CDs or some new fashion. The book hits the right issues head on and it sturs up the passion within me to go out and empower our people on these critical issues. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. Great book!!!!

    A reviewer

Dr. Alvin Poussaint and Dr. Bill Cosby created media magic with the Cosby Show, which was often accused of painting too idealistic a picture of the modern African-American family. Now, in this remarkable work, Cosby and Poussaint team up again to show families how they can acheive personal success by giving up the victim mentality and applying some time-tested principles that allow us to move towards personal victories. The book targets the mindset behind many of the critical issues in the African-American community: homicide, the rising dropout rate, divorce and single motherhood. It doesn't beat around the bush, but deals head on with the idea that we need more positivity in our communties, more nurture for our children and more respect for our own mental and physical health. By facing the issues directly, Cosby and Poussaint open to door to healing for the community with practical recommendations that any family can easily implement. The book leaves you feeling energized about the prospects for the future. Each family can make a difference - Come on, People!

    Very good Book But....

I am almost done with this very good book. I have really enjoyed reading. I am about to be a new parent and it makes me think about my childs future. I highly recommend this book to people of every race and culture. The one thing that worries me about this book is will it reach the audience it is intended too. I think those of us who purchase and read this book have a big responisibilty to see that this message gets to those who need it.

Hot Topics Not To Be Ignored

Family is the root of our survival. With all that is going on today we need bold writings to pierce the hearts of people in order to shock them back to reality. Bill Cosby is doing that. I applaud him for taking a stance on such a hot topic. I highly recommend the book below for it gets to another side of the whole culture mess.

    NOW , IS THE TIME

The message in this book reminds me of something parallel.. A study of adolescent male elephants, left to themselves in a new environment, started displaying destructive behavior. However, once an adult elephant was brought to the area, the destructive behavior ceased. The study found that with an adult role model the younger elephants learned by example. A lesson taught about themselves and their environment. Parents must live and set the standards, while guiding the child to understand the benefits associated with attaining and surpassing those standards. Drs. Bill C. and Alvin P. wants all Men to step up and be Fathers in their childrens life. Everyone benefits..

Let's get this movement going, NOW!

This book and the message that Mr. Cosby and others s trying to get aound to us is great and I also share his personal frustration. We need to embrace sound family structure in order to take back our community from drugs, violence etc and then educate ourselves so that we can truly become a great people.
